Like it or loath it - its the future my friends. Soulless or super its has to happen.

Early purchasers will be the usual LR guinea pigs but as the years role on it will become common place. Hats of the LR for getting this far but its only because they have to.

(its a bit like the mobile phone companies selling their generosity by abandoning roaming charges - forgetting to mention they have been forced to). At least with LR they are there before being dictated to. Thumbs Up

Personally I'd have a Model S instead. 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

All this electric car guff is OK, how you aren't killing Polar Bears and being green, but what if you wanted to travel from Land End to John O'Groats, just imagine the cost and number of extension leads you'd need, not to mention your electricity bill when you get back!!

And where does all the 'plug-in' electricity come from?? Power Stations!!

Just think how much electrical stuff there is on the car to go wrong. Given LRs track record it surely will go wrong and then who is going to fix it, certainly not your local friendly independent. Given that we don't have to do anything until 2040, diesel is still the way to go unless you live in an urban area then you need to get a bike. Very Happy

I'm in central London. My commute is 2 miles each way so 31 would do me just fine. Next year the range will double. ( Moore's law type thing.

31 is fine for me but let's talk proper range - Tesla S can easily do 400miles.
I think the record is 560 miles on one charge. As for maintenance, an all-battery car like Tesla has way less moving parts to maintain. Cheers, Greg

There's a few minor problems yet to be solved before going all electric. The range they quote is maximum, it doesn't take into consideration freezing cold weather making the battery less efficient, nor does it include wipers, headlights, heaters in the middle of winter that are all running flat out even in traffic jams. They don't mention diesel vehicles taking app 5 minutes to fill on the pumps, but electric a minimum of 2 hrs, how many charging points will a service station need and where's the space to site them. They don't mention the power infrastructure in this country not being able to cope with all the required charging points, how on earth can you dig up cables and re-lay larger ones in cities? (Not to mention the miles of cable needed in urban area's) It appears the majority of older house only have enough power to fully charge a 85Kwh battery in 19hrs (article in paper)

I'll bet anything we'll not see pure electric vehicles in any quantity in this country for a hundred years or more, if at all. India has already announced they want nothing to do with using them as they think it's an impossible and expensive dream.

Most people's journeys are a few miles and begin or end at home. A plug in hybrid can therefore do the majority of its miles on electric only (my wife ahs a PHEV and has used £200 of petrol to do 3500 miles). It also takes the pain out of stop-start technology. It also means you refuel at the petrol pump rather than the foul DERV one.

Yes, it isn't the best thing on a long journey - but regenerative braking means that you are using waste energy to propel the car at times.

Compared to a diesel, it makes an enormous amount of sense (at least for my life style).

There are some massive problems. Not least there are not enough power stations to charge all electric cars. And tax revenues will plummet as petrol duty is a huge revenue generator (so the UK government will need to introduce road charging). But early adopters are getting a massive subsidy from energy pricing and purchase subsidies.
Battery technology needs to advance too. But there are signs things are moving there.
Not sure what the answers will be but there will be answers. We will be using them in 20 years. I doubt that you'll be able to buy a conventional ICE-only car in 20 years time from any major manufacturer.
