Rolling L405 Buyers Guide - Issues, Fixes & Maintenance

Recent purchaser of approved used L405. With many car purchases, some issues to be addressed.

As the L405 cars have been out since 2012/2013, there are emerging posts of issues from other L405 owners on the forum.

This could become a rolling thread to help existing owners and potential buyers of these cars by means of easily locating a thread of issues, annoyances and how they were resolved.

Won't post additional issues to the thread. Will just future edit this first post with updates/ revisions about our L405, so as to keep issues relevant to our L405 tidy and in one place. It's a start at least:

Digital Handbook

Failed Front Passenger Door Mechanism (Solenoid or Motor or Mechanism or Latch)

TOPiX link

You can use this link for official technical information about your model LR and you can register for free. The link will enable you to access limited but helpful free information. If you pay a fee, you can get fuller information.

Pre sale preparation

If buying approved used, you can get a fair bit of remedial work agreed to by the seller before you collect the car which will lessen the chances of disappointment when you get the car home. Get the agreement in writing, in detail, before you pay the deposit. That way, both parties know where they stand (don't accept the seller being broad brush general with what is noted down. Be specific. If nothing else, it will put the seller on notice that you have high standards and high expectations);

6 year anti corrosion warranty

If the car has no record of either a main dealer or independent servicer logging the completion of periodic anti corrosion inspections of the car (or indeed any gaps) you will find varying answers from LRCS, LR Franchised Sales Staff and LR service Managers. LRCS told me that at the point of sale, an approved used car has a clean slate and everything returns to valid. The sales staff agreed. The Service Manager did not agree and said the warranty is invalid in those circumstances. If in doubt, get the seller (e.g sales manager, to give you a written pledge that if for whatever reason, LR decline a future corroision warranty claim due to any perceived lack of inspection records before you bought the car, that the selling dealer group will honour such corrosion claims as per the definition and terms of the original LR warranty).

Service Booklet/ 'stamps' -

The L405 does not generally have a traditional, stamped service booklet. The LR concept is that everything is centrally logged on network accessible computer systems;

Spare wheel lifting kit -

Ours is 22" spare wheel. There should be a lifting kit in the boot.

Driver's door latch recall

Recall Action Number: P068v4; Subject: Vehicle Door Will Not Latch;

Deployable towbar recall

Service Action Number: Q602v2; Subject: Deployable Towbar; Publication No.: Q602v2

Cracked windscreens

Nnt evident on the test drive. Discovered after paying for the car but before driving off. The point of this issue is, when viewing these cars over the months, I saw several cars with badly chipped or cracked original RR windscreens. Seller responded that it would not be an MOT fail. Seller was wrong. New windscreen was required.

Rear parcel shelf (broken lugs)

Can be awkward to push up and back and can damage trim if you don't use correct technique. Also check that the resting lugs on the parcel shelf have not snapped off;

Aluminium RR tread plates scratched/ scuffed

Removed and sent to Badger Anodising to be refinished and restored to as new condition (£80 for 4)

Before

After

.

Upper tailgate alignment / D pillar damage

Loose high gloss [rear of car] D pillar trim (rear driver's side) and damage to both trims from over tight upper tailgate/ high level brake light, impacting and pressing down on D pillars when the boot closes

TOPIx reveals that there is a 17.11.2016 technical bulletin about this issue - ' LTB00926v2 - Tailgate Incorrectly Aligned/Fouls D Pillar Exterior Trims'

Reported to main dealer for a remedy. Alignment addressed and D pillars replaced under warranty.

Driver's side D pillar damage

Passenger side D pillar damage

Soiled/ marked ivory coloured leather / trim and repair cost

Remedied by buying LTT leather care products, as per below forum thread:

Query L405 3.0 TDv6 Crankshaft vulnerability (if there are problems, what about warranty)?

As per below forum threads, there is not a lot of evidence on this forum that the L405 3.0 TDv6 is anything other than an
excellent engine; and if maintained properly, should stay that way:-

Main L405 3.0 TDv6 Crankshaft Thread:

Peeling rear parking sensors

The 2 black finish, rear passenger side parking sensors started to peel a couple of months into ownership. No impact damage and original sensors. Main dealer seem familiar with the issue because when I reported 'peeling' they explained the term to be 'de-laminating'. Sensors replaced under warranty.

Front Suspension Knocking

Front Suspension Knocking - LTB00557v8

The issue is dealt with on this thread:

Leather care (blue dye transfer on ivory seats)

Other owners / reported issues (though not one of the issues experienced with our 3.0 TDv6)

Resonating sump cover

Errant airbag warning light

Secondary turbocharger leaking oil into exhaust:

Causing premature dpf regeneration and hence premature service

Creaking drivers seat

Fuel sloshing in tank (due to no baffles)

Driver's door rubbing on bonnet:

Opening causing paint to chip off (door respray needed).

TDv8 lumpy tickover/ Throttle butterfly valve jammed:

AA attendance needed. Due to sticky deposits. If you have SDv8 engine watch out for lumpy tick over after starting. This may precede valve jamming shut.

Sat nav screen flickering:

Caused by infotainment master controller fault - IMC replaced under warranty (cost £3500 each).

Whistling under acceleration/ Leaking turbo hose

Main Dealer Service

May 2018 - 50k miles/ Service No.5 - £524 incl VAT - had this done early so as to keep on top of everything. Oil and all filters changed and also included front and rear Diff Oil change.

Front Suspension Control Arms (replaced under LR warranty)

Detected during service. Garage unaware or did not check as to whether items covered under warranty. I was notified by way of advisory upon collecting the vehicle. Made my own Enquiries with LR warranty and had to book the car back in to have this warranty work done another day.

Main Dealer Caused damage to rear plastic tow bar cover

Found by me on checking car before leaving MD after service. Always check your car before dropping off and before driving away. MD replaced cover.

Replacement front & rear LR brake discs

Discs became lipped. New front and rear bought from site sponsor Duckworth LR in June 2018. £336 incl VAT and delivery.

Replacement front & rear brake pads

Bought EBC Greenstuff 4x4 brake pads all round after much research. At at December 2019 (15 months after fitting new LR discs and EBC pads), never any brake squeal, little brake dust and excellent long term performance:

Tarnished bonnet lettering

2 example images from our car. Not apparently covered by the LR AU warranty although the dealership group we bought the car from replaced them FOC, 11 months after we bought the car (and yet the tarnished letter was starting to show at the point of purchase):

Wheel Bath & Removing Wheel Balance Weight Adhesive

OCD about inner rims being as clean as the wheel faces and cannot abide scruffy wheel balance weight adhesive that gets left on inner rims after tyre changes?

B & Q sell a £4 paddling pool that when filled with water will easily accommodate a 22" diameter wheel shod with tyre (if you have a compressor it's a doddle to blow up & deflate). Fill the pool with water, place the wheel inside and pour in a combination of Bilberry/ White spirit/ washing powder and then leave it to soak for a few hours. On return, using a microfibre/ net cloth the ugly balance weight adhesive comes off and the tar/ contaminants on the alloy easily clean up as new.

If you do use the paddling pool, remember to either place it on grass or put padding underneath the pool base so you don't damage your wheel face if the pool is on a hard surface.

Professional detail and ceramic coat finish

2 day professional detail completed during June 2018 at cost of £450, see one before and after image (link to detail thread/ poll below also):

Air Conditioning Service/ Re-charge

It is recommended to change the refrigerant/ re-charge the system every 2 years on the L405. The system can slow down and take longer to blow cool air, if an Air Con service is needed. The refrigerant is R1234YF. Main dealer prices seem to be about £250 although as this the below thread shows, it can be done for about £120 at Halfords. However, on 26 March 2019, paid LR main dealer £129 for an Air Con service (Air Con gas R134A and Fortron AC treatment).

New 275/40 R22 Continental Cross Contact LX Sport Tyres

Fitted November 2018. A bargain eBay find. Two brand new tyres bought from a private seller who no longer needed them. Bought for £300 the pair.

Side Vents Replaced (Dark Atlas for Santorini Black)

DIY replaced in February 2019 (genuine LR Dark Atlas for genuine LR Santorini Black):

Gear Change Fault (Transfer Case)

Car started making thumping/ shuddering noise/ juddering at low speeds and in reverse. Recovered by LR recovery after Technician assessed the issue to be driveshaft related. Diagnosis was Transfer case:
The garage referred to LTB LTB00906v6 and the invoice says they say did a "transfer box double flush and software update as per LTB00906v6 and then retesting". They concluded that remedied the problem.

Wiper Blade Set

After much research, bought a set of the below from eBay. Superb quality and value for money. Fitted in Spring 2018, they were still going strong although having ordered a further two sets, fitted a full replacement set on 6 May 2019 (don't want to risk scratching the glass for a few pounds):

CTEK Smart Battery Charger

After a couple of weeks of low use in cold weather, the boot was sluggish to remotely open and a 'Low Battery - Start Engine' warning signal appeared on the dashboard. Bought CTEK charger, left it on charge overnight and the boot sluggishness cleared, as did the warning:

3.0 TDv6 Cam (Timing) Belt Change

The L405 3.0 TDv6 cam belt (or timing belt) should be changed - according to LR schedules - at 7 years or 112,000 miles, whichever is first.

Beware, if getting quotes, check to ensure that both the front and rear belts are being changed (see link below for what should be changed). Our cambelt was changed by MD during the car’s annual service in February 2021. It cost £1173 incl VAT for the service and for them to supply and fit the front and rear belts/ components to be changed.

MOT
Despite our car being under the LR Extended Warranty which comes with MOT insurance, we don’t use the LR main dealer for the MOT. The car is always serviced by the MD in February, however the MOT is due in July. For years we’ve used a small trusted local Halford Garage for all our MOTs. The online booking service is easy, the cars are well maintained and always expected to pass, the staff are careful with the cars and the MOT charge ranges from £35 to £39.

You can go on TOPIX and find numerous additional issues ranging from design faults to faulty components, defective engines, primitive electronics and sheer bad assembly work.

Our L405 is great. Most of the issues with ours are probably more attributable to dealership preparation standards. Even at that, they are no more than teething problems (I hope).

Maybe you could outline actual issues you've experienced.

A more comprehensive and useful source of information is TOPIX as I suggested.

TOPIX can be found at this web address: https://topix.landrover.jlrext.com

You can; the only surprising thing about it is that JLR allow the information into the public domain - can't think of any other manufacturer that does.

I have had the following issues:
First L405: resonating sump cover, errant airbag warning light, secondary turbocharger leaking oil into exhaust causing premature dpf regeneration and hence premature service, creaking drivers seat, fuel sloshing in tank due to no baffles

Second L405: drivers door rubbing on bonnet where opening is causing paint to chip off (door respray needed). AA attendance needed because throttle butterfly valve jammed shut due to sticky deposits- if you have an SDV8 engine watch out for lumpy tick over after starting- this may precede valve jamming shut.

Third L405: sat nav screen started flickering caused by infotainment master controller fault - IMC replaced under warranty (they cost 3500 each). Whistling under acceleration caused by leaking turbo hose. The car was off road for 3 weeks to sort these two issues. Its barely 6 months old
