The Active Locking Rear Differential

I'm wondering if "The Active Locking Rear Differential" is worth its £490 extra or not? We need proper 4 wheel off-road capabilities that works well (at least as good as our 07 TDV8) both on snow and wet grass conditions, but I'm not sure if we then have to tick this option as well.
Anyone that have been in a situation where the Active Locking Rear Differential made a huge difference - or where you wished you had this feature?

I’ve had 5 Land Rovers without it and I’ve only ever got stuck once, where a locking rear diff would be likely to have made no difference. It’s extremely unusual for Disco 4’s to have one and they aren’t known for being too shabby at finding traction in the mud and snow!

Having said that, my MY18 SDV8 came with a locking rear diff as standard. Would I pay £495 for one if it hadn’t been standard? Despite what I’ve said, I probably would! In Land Rover accessory price terms, it’s relatively cheap (!) and if you need the car’s off road capability then it you might get to need it from time to time.

There will be benefits on the road too - tightening line under power when cornering etc.

This might be a silly follow-up question, but: The new RRS has a new transfer case design; an actuator rather than a separate motor and ECU (controlled by a multi-plate clutch). Does the new L405 has the same setup?

Are you sure it came as standard, Red? It never was a standard fit item, AFAIK.

They all have an electronic rear diff.

The dealers I have spoken to about it have suggested that it is fairly pointless. But then they were trying to sell me cars without one!

Have most of you that have ordered a new L405 added the active locking diff, or is it not worth the upgrade? Will it cause more trouble/repairs than can be justified by the added convenience?

If you use your car off road in extreme circumstances then go for it - otherwise don't bother. You may be better spending the money on a good set of AT Tyres 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Yes, it's standard on the MY17 SDV8, but not the SDV6. The brochure said it was a standard fit and I know that I didn't pay for it, but it's definitely there Thumbs Up
