For me it only seems to be useful for really major issues that last a long time. Info seems to be at least an hour out of date. Locations are approximate at best. 2012 5.0L S/C

I think it's always been relatively tardy (I remember it being the same on my old Discovery 3). Phone apps tend to be much more of an accurate reflection of real-time traffic, I guess thanks to the location data they can gather. If only they could use past data for to predict traffic behaviour though...!

i've just done 1600 miles from swindon to germany and back and had it switched off...didnt miss it at all.. ... - .- -.

Good effort. If it's off then you certainly avoid the inevitable "do you want to reroute" box which always seems to reroute you into traffic...!

I find it totally inaccurate. Rerouting off motorways up the slip road and back on again, adding tens or hundreds of extra miles to reroute round traffic which doesnt exist.

I use Waze on my iphone now, which is a shame as it's a decent sized screen going to waste... __

I find it to be rubbish. I get a warning and it tries to re-route me when I am already stuck in traffic.

The traffic warning in my Skoda is really good and is way ahead and re-routes me before I see any traffic.

Hi all.
Just some info for you regarding the TMC system on the FFRR.
I work as a service controller for London Buses in central London and as you all state the TMC is certainly misleading & here is why. As far as I'm aware the TMC system works in conjunction with certain radio stations like Classic FM which broadcast traffic information via the TMC network. What I can tell you as a London Bus Controller is that the traffic info which is used by many radio stations is so far out of date it's unreal. due to nature of my job I am in close connection with Centrecomm London and all the local authorities with regards to traffic situations & road closures in real time. The traffic information used by the radio stations and sent via TMC can be up to 60 minutes out of date and totally incorrect. I have heard many of time broadcasts on LBC London of roads that have been closed due to an RTC or police incident that have actually been reopened some 60 minutes prior to the broadcast, very miss leading. Fortunately I have access to real time traffic updates and real time cameras so I can see what roads are closed & which are open & traffic issues. As previously stated probably the best traffic app to use is Waze as most of the traffic reports are reported real time by the Waze community. The satnav system on the FFRR is great considering it was developed many moons ago, but yes the TMC is a let down but saying that if the correct real time info was broadcast to the TMC system then it would be a great aid.

i'm sure the motorway warning signs are connected to the tmc as they are always wrong.. ... - .- -.

I agree that this needs to be turned off, but so far I've been unsuccessful. In the TMC bit of the menu I've told it not to report on anything - but "there is slow traffic" is still a regular interruption. Wheres the off button please? Mike - MPx

I'm sure if you go into the TMC settings on your sat nav screen there is an option in there. I think it's in the same menu as you would use to set the broadcasting TMC channel.

I work in this sector. TMC data is very old technology now. The vehicle’s radio has a second tuner where it (not you) listens to an enabled TMC broadcast. In the UK, TMC is broadcast on the back of Classic FM.

There are a couple of things to bear in mind for optimum routing:-

1) up to date maps. Roads are changing and being added all the time. Not only this, the average road speeds are constantly changing too, a good system should take account that e.g. the A422 between coordinate x and y typically moves at z kmh at 08:06 on a Monday morning. Buying the latest DVD will give “newer” maps but they are still going to be laughably out of date at the point of you installing it.
2) live traffic. Driving without traffic is a really bad idea. You can have the best most up to date maps in the world but to be directed to the back of a huge traffic queue is frustrating at best. The M1 was shut the other day for 10+ hours and this seems to happen more and more with much more detailed analysis going on after a crash. Not funny.

Connected technology is moving very fast and most OEM systems are seriously dated before the vehicle is new let alone been through the used channels. The Whole Tesla business model is based on over the air (ota) updates where the entire vehicle characteristics, maps, diagnostics etc. are updated as you sleep. Tesla drivers’ have woken up to improved range, throttle responses, handling......

TMC is decades old now, it’s still live and free but things really have moved on, think of it as a very very narrow pipe.

I know we all hate dashboard clutter but I’m afraid that external devices / apps are the only way to go if you want to get to where you are going. I wouldn’t dream of driving anywhere without live, crowd sourced traffic as a bare minimum.  2006 4.2 SC

I don’t even bother with ffrr satnav, use waze all the time, most up to date every time.
