Strange!

That's a first! Those of you have followed the acquisition of my 1st Range Rover may or may not know that I'm selling my Disco 2, currently advertised in LR Owner International. I've just had a phone call from a bloke in London who wants to buy the car for his brother . . . in Uganda!!! 😳 At the moment he's coming to collect the car on Sunday, based solely on the strength of the advert! Obviously that won't happen unless I'm 100% sure of the payment method - but the alarm bells are ringing quietly in my ear. He could be pukka - but have any of my esteemed Range Rover owning brethren ever heard of anything like this?

PS Ignore the footnote - need to change my profile details L322 TDV8 4.4 - current

Disco 2 TD5 - sold
Suzuki Grand Vitara XL7 - sold

Be very very careful. He’ll turn up, want to take it for a test drive and then the explanation for why he can’t pay you now but he’ll send the money when he gives the car to his brother.......... ______________________________

Yes, I thought that too, mate! It doesn't go anywhere without me in it, or with me being satisfied with the payment method. The guy sounds legit, he's not claiming to be a Ghanain prince who will give me a fortune if I pass my bank details - but then again a) he would sound convincing and b) but I'm old enough to be sceptical enough! 😉 L322 TDV8 4.4 - current

In those circumstances I’m afraid a bankers draft or bankers cheque are the only methods I would accept. Too many of my mates have had online payments suddenly run into problems and then never turn up, and that’s after it looked legit enough to release the car.

I know you’ll be on your guard Thumbs Up ______________________________

watch out for the overpayment scam too.
they send you way too much then ask you to return some but it goes to a different account.
that's such a simple way of laundering money if you didn't work that out!

Sometimes they courier a cheque direct to your bank to be deposited too.
Which I think it's called the "dubai scam"

Is Uganda LHD or RHD - that could be a quick tell tale.

Might all be legit, but keep your wits turned up to max.

You could do an in-branch Faster Payments or CHAPS payment too, which would cut out an element of doubt. CHAPS is only available on weekdays and costs £25 usually, but should credit within 2 hours. Faster Payments should credit your account within the same amount of time, although that's available at weekends too. The CHAPS cut off for a same day payment is usually around 2pm, but depends on the sending bank.

With CHAPS and Faster Payments, once the money is in your account the instruction can't be revoked. It's only between instruction and execution of that transfer that you can revoke it (i.e. before the money has hit your account). If you did that in branch, that would be the time between instructing the cashier, them logging the request on the system and then the transfer being processed. This can be a matter of seconds or hours. Just don't release the car until the funds have been credited to your account - sometimes this can only show at close of business (I've had that before).

We've settled on a price, agreed on cash as payment - let's see what Sunday brings . . . . ! Even more convinced he's genuine because of the questions he asked - how many keys, do the sunroofs leak, what state is the chassis in? He seems to know his Discos! 😉 L322 TDV8 4.4 - current

Well, the Disco story has a really happy ending - just waved goodbye to Raymond and his family in the Disco, and feeling slightly guilty about having done this post in the first place. Really nice bloke, lovely family, he's chuffed bits for his brother who will be getting rather a nice Landy - and he's going to get his brother to send me a photo of 'The General' somewhere suitably off-road-ish in Uganda when it gets out there. Very Happy
PS As I was standing outside waving goodbye as Raymond drove away, Domestic Zero couldn't stand with me; when I went back into the house she was in tears Big Cry - "So many memories attached to 'The General', couldn't bear to see it being driven away!"

Doonhamer, Please tell me where "Domestic Zero " comes from. I love the name, I worked out what you mean but I can't relate the name to anything logical as to where it comes from.

Glad it all worked out but its not uncommon for them to be sent to Africa I used to have a freight airline and flew between uk nigeria and Ghana and often had discos as part of the freight

@jumpin'

Zero is the radio callsign given to a unit commander in the military (normally army). Otherwise known as the boss!

(Other lesser mortals would have something along the lines of A14 (or even bravo 20!!😎☠️👊🥋)
