does new engine boost value?

My 2010 supercharged has 93k miles and is currently valued at roughly $18k/22k USD (trade in/private sell). It just got a brand new engine. The engine by itself was $22k (extended warranty covered it... phew!). How much more can I ask for the vehicle considering it's lifespan is essentially reset?


P.S. - The dealership said the transmission and suspension are in great shape too.

Can’t speak for the US, but in the UK I don’t think this would add any value. Some buyers might be nervous - if the engine failed, what else might go wrong? Even though the engine is presumably now in good shape, the rest of the vehicle is unaffected and subject to usual wear. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

New gearbox in my SC seems to actually be putting buyers off Sad

Got it advertised at the cheapest one of it's model in the country, and still no interest. Sad

I agree, I was looking to buy an X5M from a dealer last year, he bragged that it had had a new engine fitted under warranty, but it put me off and I walked away.

Ditto I nearly bought a 12 month old RR in 1985 - a new gearbox under warranty totally put me off - I bought a new vehicle instead. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Funny. Reconditioned gearbox was one of the things I was looking out for when buying my td6 L322. If it hadn't had one I was walking away.

Seems a recon box is expected with a TD6, but not with the 6 speed, despite them having pretty similar issues.

Yes but they have Censored gearboxes Very Happy having said that the TD6 I had 10 years ago was fine 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

The 6 speed isn't that much better, especially when city-driven on the original oil for 100k miles!
The one in mine died at 96k.

Who's daft idea was "Sealed for Life"?!

New engine doesn’t equal a new car, but it’s one (major) component that’s been sorted. Here on the forum, Td6 models with new/reconditioned gearboxes are a premium. I think yours would be worth ‘a little more’. How much? I don’t know. If I was buying, I’d favour a new engine over an old one, but there are many other factors as well.

Thinking about this, it would depend on the mileage of the vehicle. If she had done say 20/30k miles it would put me off. If she had done 90/100k othen a new engine fitted it would be worth a premium.

In between these miles then it's down to the purchaser 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

UK opinion - IMO as long as it is fitted by a reputable mechanic then it should be a plus point.

However, people are odd creatures and are easily scared.

The right buyer will appreciate the benefit of a replacement engine, the wrong buyer probably won't even phone you.

If I was selling a car with a main dealer supplied replacement engine (and i do own one) i would ask for a little more than I would if it had the old engine. After all a 5k miles engine is absolutely worth more than a 100k miles engine. But as mentioned, not everyone will see it that way.

Driven too hard all the time?

They are the sort of questions buyers will be asking. Porsche 911 (996)
