The outer driver's door cable on mine went recently. Symptoms exactly the same as yours. Took my brother and I about 1.5 hours to refit a new cable (£27 on Eb*y). Most fiddly bits are:
* Reconnecting the inner door handle cable (hold the inner door handle open whilst re-fitting).
* Getting the stub of the broken cable out of it's notch.
* Refitting the window trim where it connects to the door panel (put the trim in place first, then fit door panel).
* Careful with the the door airbag - you'll have to unbolt it and let it dangle from it's cable - no sharp knocks!
* Be sure to fit the new cable behind the inner door strut or it will prevent the window from going down (ask me how I know this!).

Given that the local LR dealer wanted a minimum of £140 (1 hour labour) + parts costs to fit a new cable, it was worth doing ourselves.

You'll need a set of Torx screwdrivers and nimble fingers.
