Approach Lights Inop.

Just working through my list of to do items & I've come to the mirror approach lamps not working.

I thought it was going to be straight forward as both bulbs were blown, How wrong was I.

Replaced with new 5Watt bulbs & still nothing, tried the unlocking process & still nothing.
I know various blogs state 6Watt, but electrical library states 5Watt & unable to find any 6Watt cap less bulbs anywhere?.

Tried New LED ones & still nothing. All external & internal lights word fine & everything now points towards the Lighting control module.

Can these be switched on & off using an id tool or through the touch screen?

You know they only work when the car has been locked and you unlock it..??

LED bulbs definitely don't work, it confuses the system and it turns them off, put the bulbs back in and try a battery disconnection... Thumbs Up Pete

Highroller, Please let us know if you get to the bottom of the problem. I have the same issue and sadly gave up it. One day I will wire them into the puddle lamps. 2007 TDV8 VSE

As I've tried all of the known quick fixes. Wiring them to the puddle lights may well be my next move. Rolling with laughter

FIXED!!!!.
Decided that I wasn't going to let these beat me, So decided to take the glove box out & recheck the relay.
When I removed & replaced the relay, both LED's flashed. Now I remember reading that if they flash then they are not the compatible LED's. So swapped them for 6W bulbs & hey presto both work.

Now I'm assuming that by removing the relay this has reset them (probably the same as a battery reset) &
checking the LED specification, it states that they may not work with some CANBUS networks!.

Strange I know, but there you have it.

When you say you removed the glovebox is that literally? Where is the relay location, I only see fuses in my glovebox fusebox. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Wayneg, The relays are behind the fuses & yes just had the glove box sat in the foot well. It is a bit of a work up but it is do able.
I did notice that you may be able to access the relay once you have removed the side vent & trim, as the lighting relay is the first big green BMW relay. It may be worth a try, failing that you will just have to carry on & remove the glove box.

I have attached a photo of the relay for reference. Follow the workshop manual for reference & one of the forum threads shows a diagram of the relays (Relay No5).

Good luck Thumbs Up

hi having the same problem - been at it for hours now, even with the standard bulbs I now get a single flash only - Did you replace the relay or simply take it out and put it back in? Have tried disconnecting the battery (twice) so annoying this problem and any help appreciated

Hi Orangelemon & welcome to the Forum. I only removed the relay, cleaned the connections & replaced it. If you are using the correct 6w bulbs, then hopefully this will reset them.
Good luck.

These are small downward pointing lights in the door mirrors, they supposedly come on when you unlock the car. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Just to add to the confusion regarding lights. Today I have lights on all the interior door pockets & release handles. Shocked

At first I thought that this was a light reflection, but appears that they are small LED type lights.

The strange thing is that I've had the vehicle for 18 months & Never noticed these before!.

I can only think that I may have possibly reset or reactivated them, whilst I was playing about with the auto light switch the other day, anyone has this happen, or just the strange electrics on the FF?. Whistle
