ipod/music streaming

2010 FF 4.4TDV8 Vogue:

Looking to hook up an iPhone 6plus to stream music. I see there is a ipod socket in the centre console cubby which needs a specific cable that I do not have. Looking on ebay, these cables are £40 if you want it in a couple of days or a tenner if you wait until March (from Hong Kpng).

I also read about using another adapter like a Viseeo tune2air.. but these are over £100.. is there a cheaper working alternative? I have other plans to spend on and can do without the big expenditure just to get some music playing.. 2010 FF 4.4 TDV8 Vogue - Gone

Not cheaper than the cable for a tenner , but I use one of these through the aux port - no track changing from the wheel or touchscreen. I connect to the stock BT for calls and music only to the receiver
Tucks away in the centre console along with the power with a lead into the rear aux socket for now . Works great

Have an el cheapo copy cable In the desk drawer will have a look. You are welcome to it for a tenner and postage. I will check it works first as I’ve not used it. Bought it when I got the car but there was one already plugged in. It’s the 30 pin cable so you will need a apple 30pin to lightening connector or an older iPod. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I bought a cable, however it doesn't seem to work.. perhaps i'm being thick?

Connected to the car and to an iPhone 6plus. The phone accepts the cable (its beeps and starts to charge), the car says "connecting to ipod" and hangs for a few moments, then says "device error" (or error connecting to device, or similar).

Am I missing something? 2010 FF 4.4 TDV8 Vogue - Gone

TDSIX I'm guessing you're using a lightening adapter on the end of the 30-pin cable. It will charge but the cable and system won't allow music from an iPhone 6. I guess blame Apple. Try an older iPod and it should work. To connect iPhone search 'music streaming' here, there are options. I use my old iPod via the cable but I also have an AirPlay box feeding into the 3.5 jack. This allows music from any iPhone but not track control from the steering wheel. Fine if you have a playlist on Spotify. There is also a Bluetooth option that many here use which does allow track control.

I see. Waste of money then.. It's an aftermarket cable with female 30pin and lightning ends. I guess I should pick up an old ipod then.. 2010 FF 4.4 TDV8 Vogue - Gone

I don't think it's a waste, you've got several inputs, and hasn't everyone got an old iPod in a drawer somewhere? Get a Nano and fill it with music. Plus either an Airplay box like mine or a bluetooth. If you go for the WMA1000 Tune2Air I think it uses the cable so not a waste.
. Cheers, Greg

I'll pick up an old ipod.. I was thinking it may be a waste of money as an old ipod would be 30pin, this new cable is lightning. If I can find a useable ipod with lighting, that'll do the job.. but which? I'll need to check if a Nano has lighting.. 2010 FF 4.4 TDV8 Vogue - Gone

Any idea which iPod with a lightning connector, will be compatible? If my iPhone6plus is too new to work, how do I know which iPod will work? 2010 FF 4.4 TDV8 Vogue - Gone

Not sure any. Wasn't clear from your earlier posts but now it's clear your cable is 30-pin to Lightning.

I think this won't do any music. Only charging.

Nor are any iPods compatible. Whilst I could be wrong, it's to do with Apples change to lighting which is not only a different connector, but also a different protocol.

To make your system work you effectively need all 2011-era (or older) bits.

So you need:
- An older iPod, with 30-pin plug
- A 30-pin to 30-pin cable so that iPod coots to the car
or
the WMA1000 Tune2Air which I understand connects to a 30-pin cable (pls check this)
or
Something like the Airplay box I posted which is cool but not a perfect solution either.
or
The Dolry Stone which will work in theory BUT I bought one and it wouldn't connect so I returned it.

Can you return the cable?

I buy all my stuff on Amazon because of the returns. In case something doesn't work out (like the Dolry) I sent it back for a no quibble, free return. Easier than eBay for sure.

Greg Cheers, Greg

Thanks Greg, that makes sense (pre 2011 tech). I bought the cable on ebay, i'll see if it van be returned or exchanged.. It was not clear I was using lighting however the clues were there (connected to an iPhone6plus) Very Happy Thanks for your help, I know what to buy now. 2010 FF 4.4 TDV8 Vogue - Gone
