My Battery finally gave up after 9 years..

The battery in my 2002 V8 petrol L322 finally gave up at the weekend.

It was fitted in 2009 and lost a cell on saturday after faultless service.

Replaced it with a Yuasa with a lifetimes guarantee from halfords for £120 with trade discount.

Lets see how this one performs..

I'd never heard of them or seen any of their batteries.

Interestingly they are saying that the guarantee is applicable only in the vehicle it was originally fitted to (so no sneaky handing it down through future generations!) and it’s “not suitable for stop start vehicles”.

They didn't ask me what vehicle the "lifetime" battery was being fitted to.

But obviously if you do transfer the battery a few years down the line to another vehicle it had better not be newer than the date on the battery receipt. Mr. Green

I was wondering; what is considered a normal lifetime for a battery these days? Specifically, an AGM battery fitted to a 2011 TDV8 4.4. I'm asking because mine is now 6 ish years old, and is showing 12.1 volts at rest according to my multimeter. The car starts fine, there's no warning symbols, but should I be budgeting for a new battery? They're £200 and it looks very tricky to fit the darned thing!
I realise there's a wiki on fitting, but it still looks daunting.

Usually somewhere between 2 and 5 years, depending on use, battery quality and dumb luck! Rolling Eyes

COB 12.1 volts means it's on its last legs. Mine's similar (also 2011 AGM / TDV8) I think 12.3 at rest.

No problem starting, even if I leave the IID tool plugged in overnight Embarassed - when I do I get a low battery, start engine alert. But it started fine. (Both times Embarassed Embarassed )

I'm keeping my eye out for a deal. And I'll fit a second battery at some point.

Hmm, that what I thought GG DoubleR; I think 12.6 volts is nearer the mark for a healthy battery. Oh well, that's life I suppose. I must say, Land Rover don't make it easy on these late model TDV8s; reading the wiki there are all sorts of gubbins to remove, a battery ECU (just why?), clamps, brackets.......and then you have to use the IID tool to tell it there's a new battery.
A more cynical person might think it's all a ploy to make owners take the car to the dealers rather than DIY............

On the voltmeter, there's only a fine difference between ok and knackered:

11.89V or less - utterly dead

If your battery shows anything less than 12.4 volts it's time to replace it.

Mine has been on 12.1 for the last 4 years.....
It was 12.2 at new
