My L322 TD6 has done 212k. I get noises from the drive -train ONLY when reversing. My local independent identified worn UJ in rear propshaft so that was replaced but the noise still exists.
It feels like something is winding up and then releasing tension. Going forward, everything is fine, but reverse causes it. Up on a lift without any load, it doesn't seem to happen.
One front driveshaft was replaced recently as the rubber boot had split. Gearbox was reconditioned 30k ago and has had fluid flushed since then.
Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions? Andrew

If he only replaced one UJ then I’d be looking at the other prop UJs.

I had one badly collapsed UJ on one of my P38s I was so extremely pleased with myself that I had ‘found’ the fault I ordered one and replaced it. Off I went for a test drive and found the noise to be still there.

What I didn’t realise was that when one goes they usually all go and after examination found that they had, so three more ordered and duly fitted (a ten minute job to swap out and grease a UJ) and noise gone.

Thanks for the reply. It was the entire rear prop-shaft that was replaced with a low-mileage used item in good condition, including the centre support and UJ. I guess we will have to get it in the air again and take another look to figure out what is still wrong. It's the fact that it only has this problem in reverse that is mystifying.

The RR3 is a great car, but I doo appreciate the comparative simplicity of the old Range Rover Classic

It only makes a noise when turning. In a straight line it's OK. So . . . may be CV joint on the other drive shaft. Andrew

You are probably right, the L322 was always better at prop management than the older models. ______________________________

only makes a noise when turning ? as above ... (but CV joints generally make clicking/clacking sounds when gubbed.)

are you sure you don't get the noise or the binding when going forward slowly on full lock ? (might need an empty quiet car park to test ... look for the binding on the rear wheel facing the inner side of the circle you are turning).

The noise when turning would be more indicative of the centre diff ... which really only comes into play when you are turning and so making the front and rear props spin at differing rates.

IIRC, the TD6 and early models had a kind of self engaging limited slip centre diff (torsen?) which would engage when it detected differing rates of prop shaft rotation ... the idea being that if a wheel span loose off road, the prop would spin at a high rate, and the centre diff would bind up and transfer the power to the other prop which had grip.

Its possible that the diff is sensing the same when you reverse on full lock ... the props turning at different rates, and its binding up.


(this diff is one of the reasons you have to have a matching diameter/circumference (within 1% iirc) of tryes front and rear ) V8 or else ...

Tyres are all the same, Pirelli Scorpion Zero as a set of 4 last March and on the original RR 18" wheels, so wind-up due to that is not a cause. No adverse sounds when going forward, so more investigation needed.

Ties the same size in your case wont be the cause ... it was more a general comment of not being able to fit different sizes tyres between front and rear.

As for when turning, the props will turn at different rates because each of the wheels will be following a different line around the middle of the circle the car is going around. the different radii will mean each wheel travels a different distance for a given vehicle speed, so rotation rates will differ between the props.


When reversing at crawl speed ( i.e. foot off the brake and letting it trundle along slowly ), how quickly do you hear the wind up / release sound ?

If it were a CV joint, it'd be quick like click, click, click, click, click as you went along. ( about 6 clicks per wheel rotation )
If it centre diff, there would be much longer between the clicks V8 or else ...
