TDV8 oil level sensor failure!

Hi Guys,

Driving back from IKEA Friday night (don't judge me...) and amber warning light came on for 'oil level sensor failure'.

Took car to friendly garage next day and the diagnostic machine revealed this and another similar fault:
- P250A-37 - Engine oil level sensor - circuit (permanent)
- P0195-00 - Engine oil temperature sensor - circuit (permanent)

Failed sensors, broken wires, water ingress etc all started going through my head.. a few quick checks found engine bay fuse F20 to be failed. New fuse in, all working fine Mr. Green

All good... apart from fuses don't tend to just fail in my experience. There might be an intermittent fault somewhere else Question

update!

This got worse... and worse.

The fuse would randomly blow. Measuring the resistance to chassis the circuit would vary between 0.5ohms (enough to blow fuse), or 30 ohms. I could put a new fuse in and it would sometimes be fine for weeks, other times it would blow instantly.

I found a circuit diagram and the circuit supplies power to the Oil temperature sensor and the electro-viscous fan coupling.
I unplugged the connector from the oil sensor (i presume its the one on the bottom of the sump...?) and the fuse would still blow, so this suggests its the electro-viscous coupling. Or wiring loom?!

I spent a few evenings attempting to remove the coupling; got it separated from the pulley and fan but there isnt enough room to get it out Question the fan cowling doesnt appear to split like on the older discoverys etc.

Any suggestions?

The car drives OK without the fuse, but will occasionally go into restricted performance. And i cant check the oil level Sad

Probably stretching it a bit to ask for an update from the OP -- but anyone else had this issue.

Happened to me last night after coming off the M5 -- long drive

P250A-37 (2F) Engine oil level sensor

As suggested fuse 20 in engine compartment blown

Also followed by : -

P0195-00 (2F) engine oil temperature sensor circuit

Possibly more illuminating is when I hit restricted performance I also get: -

P0480-11 (2F) fan 1 control circuit -- general electrical failure -- circuit short to ground

The last would suggest to me that this is blowing the fuse..........

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? anyone know where the fan connections are/what they do on a viscous fan? Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

OK, so an update for anyone that may come by later.

Fuse wouldn't even stay in, as soon as I hit the ignition -- pop it went.

That pulled the oil level and sensor faults -- and then restricted performance soon followed.

I managed to identify the connector to the viscous fan, disconnected, new fuse, and now not blowing and no reported faults from the car and *no* restricted performance.

Off I go to find a new viscous fan ! Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Hi bushy,

I did the exact experiments with unplugging things and checking fuses and ggot the same results. A new fan fixed it.

To remove the fan it can just about be done by removing the manifold inlet pipe and the top radiator hose. You will need to allow the radiator to pivot forward enough to get the fan out. I removed the bumper but in hindsight I only need to remove the cross member above the headlights.

I got a non genuine fan for for £200 which turned out to be the official land rover item (LR badge and number scratched off but still visible). No problems since. I keep meaning to cut the old fan up to find out what failed but not done it yet.

If you need any other info please ask.

That's very kind of you to reply, and thanks for the tips on changing the thing.

It'd be really good to know which component has broken down in the sensor hub.

I'll probably have a bash at mine when it come off, might be a while yet though.
