Front Drive Axle & Rear Differential DRAINING & FILL

What to do to CHANGE Both the FRONT & REAR Diff Axels - with NEW OIL

1. Ensure you can remove BOTH the filler bolts on each Diff - BEFORE you take out the DRAIN Plugs - Its better to know you can fill them than find out ones seized.
2 . Ensure you have enough CASTROL SYNTRAX LONGLIFE 75W90 Synthetic GL5 Gear OIL - DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE. - Always have DOUBLE the quantity required to finish the job - in case something goes wrong.
3. see Quantities stated below - DO NOT OVERFILL & DO NOT UNDERFILL


FRONT DIFF
1. Remove Engine under shield
2. Clean the surrounding area around the Front Diff Case Plug - CHECK to see if you have had any leaks ( Important )
3. Remove the FILLER PLUG FIRST - Better to be safe to ensure you can fill it up - with a old plug stripping or seized plug
4. Remove the DRAIN PLUG and drain the fluid
5. I ALWAYS USE BRAND NEW PLUGS / BOLTS where ever I can - NOTE: I always put a bit of Plumbers Teflon Tape better known as PTFE top ensure a tight seal.

see pic below: ( shows the TRANSFER BOX BOLTS with PTFE tape on - this tape I lightly coat the Diff Threads to ensure 100% seal



6. Instal the FRONT Diff DRAIN PLUG back in - Tighten to 54Nm ( 40 ib.ft )
7. Fill the FRONT Diff casing upto: 750ml ( you will know when shes full as it will start to come back out of the filler plus DO NOT OVERFILL
8. Torque the Filler plug to: 35Nm

REAR DIFF Filling:

NOTE: ENSURE you only have a OPEN Differential and NOT a ETM Differential - as the Fluids and fill quantities are very different
A) OPEN REAR DIFFERENTIAL
B) ELECTRONIC TORQUE MANAGED (ETM) REAR DIFFERENTIAL

This only applies to version A: OPEN REAR DIFFERENTIAL
1. Remove the FILLER PLUG FIRST
2. Remove the DRAIN PLUG Next
3. Drain the Rear Diff fluid
4. USE A NEW DRAIN PLUG - see pic above
5. DRAIN PLUG - Tighten to 28Nm
6. Fill with the correct fluid see above - again ensure you DO NOT OVER FILL OR UNDER FILL - you will see it come out of the filler plus - Quantity should be: 1.14 liters
7. Insert the NEW Filler plug are tighten to 34Nm

THIS IS WHAT TO USE - TO FILL THE DIFFS UP - IT HOLDS FLUID - AND IT GOES IN 100% - NO SPILLS x
IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO A JOB - DO IT 100% and Don't Mess Around - Perfection is key



Wipe all areas clean - check again in a few days time to ensure no leaks

As this is such a simple job ( you may ask your wife to do it next time ) - I strongly suggest you do this every 20,000 miles on both the Front & Rear Diffs - although LR recommends the oil to be changed at 75,000 miles intervals - I am sure you would agree OIL never lasts that long and the cost and time to do such a simple job is a no brainier.

******IMPORTANT ****
NEVER GET UNDER THE RANGIE WITHOUT Axel Stands supporting her - and set to Rangie to MAX off road Height - ENSURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH AXEL STANDS TO FULLY SUPPORT her if she decides to lower to access height - they can and they will one day - so be warned and be prepared - SAFETY FIRST ALWAYS
I have ramps in the workshop or outside she goes onto Railway Sleepers which weigh a Tonne and worth every penny

One question, where do you get the plugs from? Do you use LR parts?

...one more - on the other post you mentioned LR copper washers but you've not mentioned these here. I take it this is for the Transfer Case?

Hey Greg - ONLY THE TRANSFER CASE USES LR COPPER WASHERS

Not The Front & Rear DIFF - on these just use PTFE Tape - They are a tight fit - DO NOT PUT TOO MUCH PTFE tape on - you just want a nice tight seal.

Greg - On a Rangie ONLY USE Genuine LR parts - Bolts, nuts / threads / washers - never use third party items and such as hell not from Ebay - hell that would be bad !!!

Greg - you check yours

Just ensure you have a TIGHT fit Allen key - Tighter the fit the less the head will wear on the plug.

ENSURE - the car is fully supported before you go under her - IF YOU HAVE SELF DEPLOYING SIDE STEPS - as I have - LOOSE THESE IMMEDIATELY - they would slice you in half if the Rangie decided to sit down !!!!

there are no pics..

many members linked their pictures to third party hosts like flicker etc...these hosts started to charge so many members deleted their accounts so the pics were lost..

the forum does allow you to upload pics onto its server and therefore they will be safe... ... - .- -.

To add to Emirates 380's excellent post; I have a 2011 TDV8 4.4 and the rear diff is the electronic version. So it's a little bit different from the details above, specifically:
*you need 1.5 litres of diff oil, Castrol SAF Carbon Mod Plus spec (different from the front diff oil)
*the drain plug is a 3/8 inch square socket - you can use a 3/8" ratchet for this
*the fill plug needs a Torx 50 driver/bit

Also worth noting that the drain and fill plugs on the transfer box need 8mm Allen bits (I think Emirates suggests 16mm bolts in the Wiki section).

It really annoys me how manufacturers use a pick 'n mix approach to their various nuts and bolts.

I have all the parts to change the front & Rear diff, and transfer case oils. However, I assumed I didn’t have the electronic version of Rear diff, but reading about the square drain plug (which Dan from Duckworths believes I have), I’m now wondering. Is there an easy way to find out which version of Rear diff you have without getting under the vehicle? Chris

Chris get your VIN and go onto the topix website. In a few clicks you'll find your build sheet which should say.

How much did all that come to then?
