4.4 TDV8 "thunk"

Afternoon all,
After spending months looking for a Westminster in grey with ivory in my price range, found one just a few miles from home. Went to view today. Had some paint on the nearside door which the garage have said they will sort and it wasn't a bad car.

This is the first 4.4 I've viewed, and what struck me was that when I put it into gear (either D or R ) there was a fairly significant "thunk" which I could easily feel through the drivers seat. Reminded me of putting my old bike into first gear.

Is this, dare I ask, the norm. My 3.6 seems much smoother when putting it into D.

Cheers all.

Same here, mileage is now 54k. All changes, whether stationary or on the move, are imperceptible, even first thing when cold.
How many miles has the car done, and has it ever had the ZF auto box fluid changed? ZF themselves suggest changing the fluid at 50 - 75k (JLR say nine years / 150k or thereabouts). Budget £200 if you DIY, double that at a garage.

If I was buying a TDV8 today, early-ish fluid changes would be near the top of my "must have" list.

Just bought a 2011 TDV8 and I definitely don't get a thunk.

If you felt it through the seat, that really isn't good.

If you like the car and everything else feels fine, drive it again and see if the same thing happens.

Thanks gents, confirmed my suspicions. My old bus is on 150,000 miles but when I got back in it after the 4.4 it just seemed a nicer place to be. Nicer as in better looked after, not the actual cabin design. The newer car has done 95000 miles.

Search continues, I keep trying to convince myself I like black cars, would be so much easier.

I have just bought a 2010 4.4 TDV8 and was shocked at how smooth the gearbox is. No thunk on mine either. The Best 4x4 by far, so long as you have deep pockets.

No clunk on mine but it doesnt sound like gearbox more like slack in the drive train. As others have said maybe best to keep looking or else have it inspected before purchase. [/list] 2015 4.4 AB

Nice one Stan. Laughing

Glad I never started a poll, looks like 100% no thunk. Thanks again.

Northern Monkeys, it's still being pampered and has been the most reliable car I've ever owned. Normally cars last 6 months with me then I fancy a change. This one I've had for nearly three years. Lovely and quiet still. That may explain my reluctance to part with it and hence the rather laid back approach to a newer one.

Edited to add just approaching 151,000 miles.

Thumbs Up
