I've noticed a strong burning rubber smell after longer journeys in my SDV8 L405. I can't smell it in the cabin but as soon as I get out of the car there's a strong smell that appears to coming from underneath the car near the rear passenger area. The smell doesn't appear after short journeys.

I've read the previous post regarding burning smells but these all appear to be L322 model related. Has anyone experienced anything similar on an L405? 2019 L405 SDV8 Autobiography

touch the wheel after the long journey and see if the wheel is hot..it could be a sticking caliper.. ... - .- -.

Burning rubber?....those were the days!!!

Yes, I’ve had it on mine too. I did check all the calipers straight away and they were all cool. I’ve had the same thing on at least one of my late D4’s. It never seems to have caused a problem.

I’ve been driving locally for a few hours and noticed a burning rubber smell inside the car, I’ve checked all the alloy wheels, and these are all fairly cold. No leaks underneath the car, popped the bonnet and it just smells like a hot Diesel engine ? No smell of burning rubber?

Do we still think this smell could be the dpf regeneration?

Any help appreciated....

I think the DPF regen sounds like a plausible explanation. Kev

Or a leaking engine oil cooler? They leek onto the exhaust and STINK!!! Worth a check

Leaky oil cooler was my first thoughts...get underneath and see if any oil on rear edge of engine under tray first. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Agree with Dr Rob and Craig, done quite a few of these and they do stink a bit.

Only had a quick look this morning, I’ll have more time at the weekend.

Found this wet area looking down with the engine cover removed.

Ok so after further investigation, I have a very small leak from the oil cooler gasket 😖 (as you predicted.) currently ordering the recommended seals / gaskets as per other the other threads on the subject.

I’ve got access to a two post lift during the Xmas period so will hopefully fix this issue and investigate another 🤔
