We had a 67 plate HSE on loan last week. Decent car although not as nice as L405. More cramped cabin, electronic gearstick wasn' assured when changing from drive to reverse and a harsher ride on 22" wheels compared to the L405.

That gearstick though, no thanks.

I spent half a day driving a Velar (D300 R-dynamic SE), a RRS (3.0 SDV6 autobiography) and a FFRR (4.4 TDV8 autobiography) back to back. I drove my wife's Evoque (2.0 TD Autobiography) there in the first place, so I tested the entire range.

I prefer the look of the RRS from the outside. Inside, the FFRR and RRS both give a command driving position that the Velar doesn't. I didn't really notice any difference inside the FFRR and RRS in terms of space (in the front - I didn't sit in the back), but the boot in the FFRR is better (the split tailgate). I liked both.

I bought a RRS. Next time I might buy a FFRR. I don't think I will buy a Velar. My wife loves her Evoque. RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

I've owned both vehicles, L494 and L405. In my opinion the FFRR delivers a much more refined and enjoyable experience.

Interesting thread....

I’ve owned a sport 2010 year before and enjoyed it as it was remapped. I then went on to own cayenne’s, ML etc but am now back to either purchasing a supercharged 4.2 2008 or 5 litre 2010 OR a supercharged sport 2010. Driving myself nuts as just cannot make up my mind

My guts telling me the 5 litre supercharged as A. It may be my last splurge on a car (as my welll salaried jobs have come to an end and B I will only be doing 10 miles a day so no need for a diesel.

I would go FFRR - they are more expensive new for a reason. And for engine I would search for both in parallel and simply buy on quality whichever engine. (Less owners, history, mileage, condition, options etc). I would also buy factory original, no aftermarket kit or remapping, tuning whatever. That way it will last and last and will always look "classic" as you both slide gently into a comfortable old age.

Several threads on the 4.2 vs 5.0 topic recently, e.g. http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic42656.html , which I joined when I was looking/buying back in Feb.

I was in a similar situation - buy a decent late model 4.2, or spend a fair bit more to get a nice, reasonable mileage 5.0 S/C.

Opinions on here were divided. Having looked at both models, the 5.0 S/C really is much more modern inside, in AB spec has leather everywhere, the new TFT dash, a much more modern engine, the adaptive dynamics suspension, and various other bits (which I think were vaguely summarised in one of the other similar threads). It's slightly more efficient fuel wise, but can suffer from the timing chain guide issue, which isn't a cheap fix.

The 4.2 S/C has a superb reliability reputation and seems pretty rock solid, but compared to the 5.0 S/C, looks a lot more dated inside. But in it's standard spec, the 4.2 Vogue SE S/C model seems to have some additional default toys beyond the 5.0 S/C AB, including RSE, TPMS (I think), and no doubt other items.

I ended up paying the extra and getting a 2011 5.0 S/C as I just preferred the overall package, and given I plan on keeping it reasonably long term, wanted the more recent model.
