How to temporarily repair a split top intercooler Hose.

As you may have seen I had a top intercooler hose split on the way back from northern France with the tin tent on the back.

Bong - engine system fault - no power limp home mode, black smoke under load and unable to apply much in the way of right foot without another bong.

After slowly making it back to dover with many switch off and on resets to get out of limp home mode i had an investigate back at the dover campsite.

The top hose on the right hand side of the intercooler had split on the bend closest to the intake manifold end, about a 2" split where my finger is in the photo below.

A quick and easy fix was needed, and a quick search of the Halfords website produced this for ฃ4.99, it is for cooling system hoses but worked perfectly well on the turbo hose.

to remove the hose, lift the front of the engine cover up, it is held on by a couple of push on fixings so a bit of force may be required, but it will just lift.

when you lift the cover you can get access to the rear jubilee clips.

undo both the rear and front jubilee clips indicated.

remove the hose. I then repaired the split following the instructions on the packet of tape, basically you wrap the reinforcing tape round first, followed by the self amalgamating tape followed by another layer of the reinforcing tape, don't be shy with either type of tape, then refit the hose in reverse.

the repair held for the 180ish mile journey back to Derby driven normally, then the hoses were replace as the local MD had them in stock in the morning. So if you are contemplating a long journey in a TDV8 circa 2007-2009 which hasn't had the intercooler hoses replaced, then a roll of this may just get you out of trouble....... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

Had a really good time cheers, we only had one bad day weather wise, but spent that day in the pool.

Did mont saint michel, and the zoo at champrepus which was nice.

Wish I'd read this before driving from Holland to Switzerland. Very slow and tedious journey. Like driving my TD6 with a heavy trailer on the back.

Just had the same happen to me going up a 1 in 4 foot to the floor and it would not go anywhere, scary. Had to reverse onto the grass verge to investigate and the suspension dumped the steps onto a hillock I thought it was a huge failure by the dramatic fashion it all happened.

All I had to hand was gorilla tape but it has done the job and is still holding 3 days later. New pipes now purchased and about to be fitted, when the rain stops.

The funny part is that a service is booked for next week!

Gents, a good check is to squeeze the pipes periodically. If they feel hard and plasticky then your risking a split! If they feel rubbery and soft to press then they should be okay!

They generally harden with age/use so, when you check โ€œstuffโ€ for a long journey, check the top hoses too! ๐Ÿ‘

I had the same thing happen (turbo hoses split) coming back from Cornwall about 3 years ago. I worked out what it was after a quick search on the Internet & then kept it below 2 / 2.5 thousand revs on motorway, by only doing 60 with cruise control on all the way home to Sussex.

Question :- Once replaced (I had brand new genuine LR hoses fitted via an approved LR dealer) - How long will they last before they "should" be replaced again, irrespective of another split occurring?
Approx every 5 years?.... More than 5 years?...Less?
