Gearbox/Transfer Box failure

Hi all,

Thoughts on this please... I know I am going to have to drop the transfer box at very least... but could this be output shaft of gearbox doing its splines? Sad
Last weekend was driving out of a village at about 30/35mph under no real load when I heard a pop and had no drive..
Today was first time i’ve Had a chance to have a look underneath and this is what happens etc..
One video is me lying underneath rotating a rear wheel. Other is the noise it makes when put in drive. It does not hold in Park...

Not a Diff, All wheels rotate driveshafts and propshafts...
Problem lies with the transfer box I think... 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE

Were the rear wheels off the ground or on the ground when you were turning the rear propshaft? If they were off the ground you need one further check to see if either propshaft is turning with the vehicle stationary in Drive with all four wheels on the ground. If either propshaft turns then you have a diff/driveshaft problem. If neither propshaft turns then it’s a transfer box/output shaft spline problem.

I was pulling away from a set of lights then lost drive. Front prop was spinning when car was in gear but no drive..the front diff coupling /propshaft had rounded its splines. This was what was happening when you selected drive..it wasn’t an expensive fix either for once

It happened to me a few months back. easy fix. new coupling etc.
500290 40.00 Front Prop shaft coupler Duckworths
coupling 30.00 Flexible coupler 00012G Duckworths
DA2355 98.09 Front Prop shaft coupler LR Direct

certainly not a big job if it is the splines.

The front propshaft spline failure issue was fixed for good when Land Rover moved to the ZF 6HP26/Magna DD295 driveline. Vehicles built after 2006MY - like Rich_Allen’s - weren’t therefore affected by this problem.

The sound on your first vid is the same sound coming from my L322 when 6hp26 output spline finally let go. Below is a pic with the box out. I replaced both tranny and transfer box as input gear was equally worn. Before the new (used) unit was fitted, which came from same vehicle, I had both ends liberally lubricated.

Yep... just got round to dropping transfer box out..
same scenario...
Transfer box is only wet as I sprayed brake cleaner in to flush the crap out...

The same happened to my car a few years ago.
Along with fitting a recon transfer box I found a supplier of the shaft as Land Rover do not supply it seperatley.

RRPhil was quite helpful with tips & advice. This also occurred in the L319 & L320.

Although my box had about 240,000km on it when it failed, it was faultless. Looking at the online vids it didn’t look to hard to rebuild. The output shaft is the last thing in the box to come out.

However as indicated I was lucky to find a low km tranny and TF box from a 2010 FF. The only issue was the transmission control module was not compatible with my 2008 FF. So I ended up using my old mechatronic. I will swap over the valve body one day.

I was interested to read Land Rover’s position on this failure in RoverDramas’ post, whose output shaft spline failed on his 6HP28 after only 62000 miles, where they said this was caused by “wear and tear” which was “heavily influenced by driving style”. When RoverDramas questioned if the failure was due to lack of lubrication of the spline, LR's response was “…anti seize grease is applied during the removal and refitting of the transmission. However, this is a service procedure and is not necessarily the same process completed when the vehicle is in the manufacturing process as these parts are fitted dry”
