Evening all !!

After the demise of my TD6 I am now looking to petrol. Can you give me any major indicators for the BMW 4.4 as I am seeing one tomorrow. Its done 120,000, full LR history allegedly. I am only interested in what to look for with the engine as fully versed in the rest of the car, any help greatly appreciated,

Never had any issues at all with the engine on mine (from 60k to 120k) however from the bits you say you are familiar with expect:

Final Stage Resister - should have been replaced by now
Front driveshafts replaced on recall
Radiator clogged at bottom end
Gearbox "sealed for life" so wont get touched by LR but needed an oil change at least 40k ago. Probably fubarred by now.

Specifically on the engine (over 6 years of owning one):

1. Collapsed/destroyed crankcase breather pipes on top of engine - search is your friend here.
2. Small heater hoses at the back of the engine need to be checked - if they go you obviously lose all the coolant rapidly
3. Clogged radiator - causes various problems/symptoms
4. Continuous rattling is timing chain guides etc. Rattle on startup for a second or two is hydraulic tappets/vanos - annoying but as long as it goes away shortly after startup no problem.
5. Valve cover gaskets


Other than that, pretty reliable. Ours got sold at 150000 miles with no problems (having done all of the above over the 6 years we had it).

And one more, check all coolant hoses - they could be quite brittle due to the elevated temperature the engine runs at.

If any look old/brittle/discoloured, replace them else you may live to regret it (probably at the most inopportune moment when the top hose lets go).
