ok thanks Graeme. Great to know. Sounds like you might be in the trade?

Does anyone feel they would want to DIY this one?

The biggest task, aside of tapping the new hole, is the front diff and LH driveshaft have to come out.

I am kinda up of it and wondering if somebody would want to tackle this in duo with me? Two cars, two newbies, plenty of cross check - safety in numbers is what I'm thinking.

South East. Would have to find somewhere to do it too, feels like a ramp job.

Could be a good one, let me know?

Greg Cheers, Greg

I'm only a DIY'er (been one for nearly 60 years) although I didn't have any desire to tackle this job myself, perhaps partly because I generally work alone. However I also wanted insurance cover for the job in case metal shavings found their way into the sump. The 3.0 TDV6 task was simple and although I took nearly double the LR estimated time, it was only an afternoon's job.

Removing the drive-shafts from the diff and then the diff should be easy enough but note that I was unable to remove a hub from its driveshaft when attempting to change a front wheel bearing even though I had made a puller along the lines of the LR tool as the spline was exceedingly tight in the hub.

Greg,
I admire your pluck 🤔👍
I thought the whole front subframe had to either come out or at least be moved?
If it helps, the job took two and a half days when mine was done, but that was in a MD workshop with ramp etc.

Looks like I need the oil drain mod, I’m well out of warranty so looks like I’ll be forking out to get this done.

Is there any need to look at replacing turbos whilst this is happening as most of the dismantling will have taken place?

I don’t suppose anyone can point me in the direction of an engine diagram with part numbers etc, I can’t seem to find anything for 2010-2012 4.4? Interested to see how it all looks, I assume they are a sequential setup with one either side?

Cheers

Thought I'd look under the n/s wheel looking just over the shaft to see if I had the mod already done........inspection light, mirror, could I find it, could I heck! I tried looking in front of the n/s wheel then behind the n/s wheel. There are two shiny LR pipes running together parallel but I'm guessing these are a/c, I don't seem to locate the longitude pipes......any clues for a dimwit? 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

You really need to get underneath. It's not easy at all though even from underneath.

Post some well it pics and we'll be able to tell you

If you're turbo has been diagnosed as "leaking" and you don't have the turbo drain mod then there is a train of thought going around to have the mod done first (~£1K) and see if that alleviates any oil leaks. Lot cheaper than forking out for a new turbo (£1.8K) plus fitting...
I'm doing a thread on where and how much here: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic53369...+drain+mod 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Need to look behind the 2 horizontal AC pipes to see if it’s been done. Not easy by all accounts Whistle 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I’m looking at buying one with over 100k Miles, with that mileage would it be a safe bet this would’ve already been done?

And they may not suffer from the problem either.
Mine now has 106k on it and has not been modded, but it gets driven such that it's up the revs enough for the 2nd turbo to kick in. Too many toys, not enough time

Mine doesn't seem to smoke at all, I don't know if the mod has been done but I make sure to "paddle down" a few gears on a long drive periodically to get the revs up to 3k or so. Geoff

I’m not in the UK at present and wonder if there is a way to check if the mod has been completed on a car I am interested in. I have the VIN and registration, so how would I go about checking?

Based on what I've read it is a bit tricky to check without getting underneath the car, and then it's not that easy! I'm in the market for a car, I've pretty much resigned myself to taking the car for a steady drive, then after a good 15mins of steady (under 2500rpm) driving, put my foot down and take it above 2500 rpm and keep an eye in the rear view mirror for a smole screen Smile

Happily be corrected though
