2014 Autobiography Tailgate problem

Hello,

could somebody help me again please - I find this site more useful then talking to my local main dealer!

I have an SDV8 Vogue Autobiography.

The Tailgate has been working fine for years. Now it won't open from the button under the dash inside, nor from the remote control. I can open it manually and lift it up, but once up, it will not close from the top door button inside. The bottom tailgate will not close either from the button or remote. Basically I can now only open or close it manually. Also, I am now experiencing a flat battery very quickly. I have left it charging overnight, so that the car starts of a morning, but still no operation of the rear tailgate from any of the buttons. Is something now draining the battery?

I get the three beep alarm sounding from the car when I press the remote, but nothing else?

Is there some kind of factory reset I can do?

Here's hoping

Mike

Maybe be obvious but the boot doesn’t work when In drive. You need to be in park if the engine is running. Both the remote and button under the dash will open with the engine running but only when in park. No reset that you can do yourself as far as I am aware. 2013 L405 AB 4.4SDV8 Luxor/Ivory, 2007 Vogue TDV8 Epson Green/Sand, 2008 Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue/Sand, 2003 Vogue 4.4 LPG Epsom Green/Sage, 1998 Vogue SE 4.6 LPG Epsom Green/Cream

Hello

Thanks for the reply. I can confirm that I am trying to operate the tailgate in park or even with the ignition off ??

I decided to call Land Rover Assistance to see if this was a common problem that one of their tech guys could sort. Was told that a technician would not be available until tomorrow night. In the meantime they sent an AA patrol. A very helpful guy turned up who had phone access to LR technical guys. He went through lots of steps but all to no avail. He advised booking it in with the main dealer to resolve. Bit worried about that as my local LR main dealer has proved to be a bit problematic in the past - but unless there is a miracle reset out there, I guess I have no choice.

He tried holding the upper tailgate button (inside) for 20 seconds which apparently is a reset procedure but no joy.

Strangely the boot does unlock when the tailgate button is depressed on the remote key fob, but only then opens a few mm - I have to manually open it then.

I also get the three beeps when the remote is depressed but nothing more.

The AA guy believes that the battery is draining because the tailgate motor may be drawing power due to a fault - possibly with the closing / opening motor?

Its a low battery ! I have seen this myself - the battery management of the car shuts down every electrical system which is not necessary in the moment and you can only move the tailgates manually. The car beeps and in the control display you can see "Low battery - start car immediately". When the battery is loaded again, the tailgate works as usual.

The holding down of the lid button down isn't actually reset of the system, its to re calibrate the height you want the lid to open to (when it does work that is)

Im not an expert but it could be your battery (remember these cars have 2) - LR's (and other cars) are so dependant on batteries for all the toys on them these days, that when a battery can no longer supply a steady stabilised voltage/current - all sorts of weird and wonderful things can happen.

Of course - you have checked fuses are ok yeah ? Shocked

Hello

Firstly thanks ever so much for the replies - much appreciated. If the problem is the battery then I will change it and save myself a few pounds on the main dealer charging me for it. I am reasonably handy, so just a couple more questions !

Where is the battery located?
Is it buried in the floor under the spare wheel in the boot or somewhere else?
What is the make and model of the battery required?

Do I need to to any kind of re-calibration or reset of the systems after it is fitted?

Is it just the one battery or two?

Is there a brand of battery to avoid?

Is there a brand highly recommended?

Sorry to be a pain but i want to get this sorted!

Mike

There are others much wiser than me on this forum but I don’t think it’s straight forward as it once was to change the battery(s). Once changed you have to tell the battery management system (bms) what the spec of your new battery is so it can do all its calibrations etc.

The batteries are located in the rear. One under the spare wheel well and the other I think on the driver side inner wing. I have no idea which powers what on the car or if they work together.

From LR Topix, these fault references might assist:

Powered Tailgate [UK]
The Tailgate will not power close – however it can be manually closed & locked.
Global reference: Q274 UK

Power Tailgate
Power tailgate will not power close affecting 2013 MY Range Rover vehicles.
Global reference: Q247v2 UK

Did this get resolved?

If s is it a dealer fix?

Will they do it under warranty?
