Australia 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Atacama Sand

Blue I assume you have a LHD car. When facing the front of the car is your reservoir on the left side ie passenger side on LHD car.

Also did you replace your alternator by removing the reservoir? ______________________________

Yes I have a LHD Rover and facing the Rover from the front it's on the passenger side.

Yes, I found it was easier to just remove the Expansion Tank to access the alternator.


So, let's say I have to remove the fan clutch to replace, which way would I loosen the 32mm (or 36mm) nut with spanner tool?
Reason I ask, is I'm hearing a little tick when starting in the morning from that area, after warming up, it stops. I did experience a 'Check Coolant Level' message yesterday after overheating and some radiator fluid on the ground. I did get this message a few other times. Don't know if it's just the sensor under the expansion tank and or another issue with the over heating.

Best tip i have is stick something infant of your Rad's otherwise they might get clipped by your hands / parts, gives a much nicer working environment.

Interesting reading, mine has just started to play up (3.6tdV8) I can hear quite a whine at about 1000-1300rpm. Voltage can reach 13.9 but idling it slowly drops to 11.2 volts. Alternator command is 54% and Load 96% according to my diagnostic, though to be honest not sure how relevant that is. Going into the dealer next week as it is under warranty.

Battery appears fine as it holds what ever charge is in it without issue. My manual Otopix) states turbo off to temove alternator that right for a diesel or can you get it off with out removing it?

Update: My alternator totally fried itself and caused huge battery drain so I had to disconnect the main starting cable to save the battery, Land Rover warranty covered a new alternator but wow it would have been expensive nearly £800.

A quick note to say that I have replaced the alternator in my TDV8 3.6 today, following the instructions and photos in this post. It is possible on the drive with basic tools, but it’s not a quick job and space is extremely tight. I can confirm that the alternator will come out as described here, but I did spend a couple of hours today wondering how!

The only additional thing is did was release the dipstick tube bracket, which gave me another mm or two, which turned out to make all the difference. Even then, I’m not quite clear what I did to get the alternator out through the very tight gap. Putting the new one in was only marginally easier.

Like others before me, I did take the wheel arch liner out in the hope that it would give me some access. I can confirm that was a complete waste of time! I found that removing the two screws holding the coolant expansion tank in place and moving it to one side helped a little when it came to getting my hands in to undo the main alternator terminal. I could just about get an open-ended spanner on it to crack it loose, then undid it with my fingers.

It’s not a job I’d be keen to do again in a hurry. I have the battle scars to show for it and any Indy charging 4-6 hours labour for doing this job is definitely earning their money. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

So, after reading this thread I'm feeling relieved.
Last few weeks I'd noticed a whine related to engine revs. This morning the battery charge warning light stayed on and when I stopped there was the distinctive whiff of electrical death from the engine. New alternator needed then confirmed by the voltage test. 12.5v whilst running and dropping slowly.
The relief has come as it's a job I can do and the new alternator is a very reasonable €230 delivered. Thumbs Up

Edit: Got the alternator refurbished with new rectifier and bearings for €80 . Chuffed with that but not a job I have fond memories about.
Censored me. (I needed another 2 joints in each arm). Still....... done now Thumbs Up 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

Hi all,
Just pitching in to pay thanks to the author of this how-to. I did it yesterday in the car park outside my workplace. Barely made it there on a fully charged battery. Once I stopped, she wouldn't start again without a jump. I got a new alternator, belt, 3 idlers and a new tensioner from Maltings offroad on ebay for about 15% of what the local Indy was quoting for the whole job. The cost was simply prohibitive, so I basically had to tackle it myself.
I followed these instructions quite closely. It is doable, but definitely not for the faint of heart. Extremely tight and a lot that needs to be dismantled for access. I found that it helped to undo the jubilee clips an separate the induction pipe that runs in front of the alternator. I didn't remove the dipstick tube, and the metal water pipes at the front I just undid at one end and tied them up and to the side with a strap.
About 4 hours all in and very satisfying afterwards!
