Battery AGM or not

My 2010 3.6TDV8 has an AGM battery that is not very healthy. I thought AGMs were only used with stop/start technology which mine does not have.

I have a brand new unused Bosch type 020 battery that I bought for my old vehicle but never fitted so could I use this to replace the existing AGM battery as it is a higher power rating or are there other differences.

Keith,

I went for a non AGM on my 4.4 TDV8 -- mainly because Halfords recommended the battery for my vehicle and it comes with a 5 year waranty -- however others here have pointed out that this *might* not be a crash hot idea -- so I'm in a testing phase, the battery has only been fitted for a week or so.

But here's the not so good news for you -- if your battery compartment has all the same gubbins in it as mine the 020 won't fit -- I know, I tried an 020 first, it had a larger capacity than the 019 I have fitted, and was £7 cheaper, winner all round I thought, but what with the drain pipe from the scuttle panel, and the very large +ve terminal connector there isn't enough room for it Sad

Hope that helps

I have an 020 in my 2011 , its very tight and i trimmed off a bit of the bottom plastic on the battery ro facilitate the fitting. The 2011 uses an AGM normally because the alternator is ' intelligent ' and varies the charge. It keeps the battery at 80% and so it may not be suitable for a normal battery. All of my info is from the net and im far from an expert. 2015 4.4 AB

Thanks for the replies. Have been reading what I can I am not certain mine should have an AGM anyway.

Can anybody with a 2010 3.6 TDV8 confirm what sort of battery they have.

Keith

Dolph,

How on earth did you get it in? -- at the right hand end is the scuttle drain pipe, and then at the left hand end is a huge +ve terminal block connector -- I get it goes in front to back, but left to right was a nightmare!

Keith, your 2010 had a mod done by JLR to the charging system and at that point they changed the batteries to AGM... I believe with the Mod you would need to run an AGM sir... Thumbs Up

Craig

Thanks for that, I also pm'd Dan at Duckworths and he sort of confirmed the same thing.

As mine is a 3.6 I don't have the ecu in the way so I am going to see if the 020 that I have will physically fit and the decide which AGM to buy as there does seem to be some debate as to the possibility of fitting the 020 in the later vehicles.
