Broken Caliper not covered under Approved Used Warranty

My car has been in the dealers for new rear brake pads and was told a caliper pin had broken and a new caliper was required on the o/s rear but should be covered under warranty. Collected the car today and was told the new caliper is not covered under warranty as the pin snapped due to corrosion and that means it’s not covered.

I called Land Rover Used Waramty chap myself and made my case as to why it was a mechanical failure and should be covered. I have now escalated and the warranty team are reconsidering and asked the dealer for photos of the old caliper.

Maybe I’m wrong but this failure should not occur on car that can wade in 1m of water, cost £108k new and even if it does, should be covered under warranty.

Let’s see what happens..... Current MY2020

Stick to your guns, I have to agree that such an icon of off road ability should be far less delicate when it comes to these issues.

And how exactly can they tell the pin snapped because of corrosion and not because their mechanic wasn't over zealous with a drift and hammer or what ever tool they use to remove the pin? - they are not materials specialists. Are they providing you with evidence that the pin had rusted to the point that it materially affected its tensile strength? - no, they're not. They're talking B*****s.

Remember its usually the "trainees" that do the standard servicing and things like pad changes. I would put money on that it was they that messed up. It should be the dealership that's coughing up for the replacement, not you and not the warranty company. - doubt they'll admit it though as callipers are about £1k per corner.

Land Rover Approved Used Warranty have confirmed that the calliper has signs of rust and therefore not covered under the Warranty.

I find this totally unacceptable that this failure is not covered. So I have made a decision.....

For Sale, 2014MY AB 66K miles, 2 owners, looked after and cared for. Has RSE, massage seats, towbar etc. A quick view is recommended before it crumbles into a heap of flaking brown metal. Has 6 months of Warranty left which you can use to wipe your a Censored se.

These are the photos the dealer provided to the Warranty team.....

There is surface rust, but no photo of the pin itself. Apparently the other three callipers are in good condion.

I have asked for photos of the pin as this was the component which failed, not the caliper. Surely they must have seen this to make their decsion?? Current MY2020

If the other three are in good condition, this one must have been substandard when new and therefore not fit for the purpose for which it was sold. They should pay, threaten them with small claims court. I had a similar situation with a 2.5 year old ford galaxy, alloy wheels were corroding, Ford refused a warranty claim saying corrosion wasnt covered, we went to court and I got 4 brand new alloys and centre caps.

Its a brake calliper, of course it has corrosion.

My from new warranty expires in November and I have been considering if a £1000 extended warranty is a good punt. letters not necessarily in the right order

Hate to say this but imo sliding pins mounting brake callipers onto carriers require regular maintenance to keep them in an efficient operating state. I tend to take mine out every year to clean and lubricate them. Having said that even without any attention at all I doubt a pin would break due to corrosion in 4 years or so. Usually they tend to corrode in position such that the calliper can't then slide. Time for a new carrier then.
You can certainly reduce the corrosion of the carriers by a simple light smear of oil, mine are still like new after 14 years.

They're probably embarrassed to show you the pin because the trainee had to grind it off after he rounded the head of the pin Whistle

Just a thought, from your pictures it appears the calliper slide pin has corroded itself into position in the calliper carrier and so can neither slide nor be removed. Hence no picture of the pin, they can't get it out. This being the case a new calliper is not required, a new calliper carrier is required.
Slide pins corroding in place is not that uncommon if they are not cleaned and lubricated every so often.
I note you say the other slide pins on the car have been checked and are ok.
I would seriously question this, imo it would be prudent to have each of the pins removed, cleaned and lubricated and refitted. I have a suspicion that the pins were checked without removing them simply by wiggling each of the callipers about.
One thing concerns me about the corroded pin in the picture, there is no way the face of the pin should be corroded. This face should be tightly bolted to the calliper and as such should not be able to corrode at all.
I have to wonder whether in fact the brake pads have in the past been changed and on reassembly the calliper bolts into the pins have not been adequately tightened and have worked loose and so allowed corrosion to form between the two mating faces. This obviously should not happen particularly as thread lock should be applied to the bolts before refitting.
In fact looking at the hole in the end of the pin which should be threaded for a bolt it looks as though the bolt has been missing for some considerable period of time. This would mean that the calliper has been held in place with only one slide pin and effectively has been able to rotate about that pin at will.
It beats me how you got an mot for the car, assuming the bolt was missing at the time.
Best of luck with the warranty claim but I have my doubts...

Hi all, just wanted to close this out.

Today I received a call from the Service Manager at the Dealers following an email I sent to him and the Warranty Team.

He told me he had spoken to the Warranty team and they have now accepted the claim and refunded the money for the new calliper.

It's a shame I had to argue my case for a week; it was more out of principle than the money. Current MY2020

That's good.

I wonder what they would say if presented with a caliper that had been panted with Hammerite by the owner. Hammerite as well as making the caliper looking cosmetically better is meant to prevent/ seal any corrosion.
