Fitting Dash Cam

With information from Alistair in this thread http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic30917.html

I decided to tackle the install of my dashcam in the L405

I fitted the dashcam on the n/s of the rear view mirror

I ran the wire up along the headlining and down the inside of the A pillar trim, just pop the airbag badge out and there is a fixing bolt behind, you will need a 6mm spanner

I fastened the wire to the cables which run down there making sure not to place it in front of the airbag which runs down there.

By lowering the lower glovebox and removing the dash end panel

You can feed the power cable down towards the fuse box. If you note the large dash mounting screw in the photo, this is the one I used as an earth.

It's quite a large bolt so you need a ring terminal with an 8mm hole.

I used an 'add-a-fuse' on the positive terminal and plugged that into the fuse for the auxiliary power socket-cubby box which I think was fuse 52.

and that's about it, it works and switches off when the ignition switches off which is how I wanted it, so popped all the panels back on and clicked the glovebox up into position and that was it. Cheers Ian

Good job nice install Thumbs Up

How come no-one seems to wire it into the overhead console? I wired my l322 in to the overhead, and my Audi S8, and I am thinking to do my L405 today into the overhead any clues on the best cable to tap into?

I wired ours into the rear fuse box - really easy, nothing to unscrew. Straight across the headlining on the right hand side and then down the C pillar into the fuse box.

One of the reasons I ran my wire down to the fuse box was because I didn't want to tap into a wire up there and I wouldn't have known which wire to use. However, running it down to the fusebox took an extra 10 minutes and that was the way I had done it on my previous D4's Thumbs Up Cheers Ian

Great ‘how to’ Hairy Dan! One question though; how does the A pillar trim actually come off? I’ve removed the ‘airbag’ tag, taken out the bolt and the door seal but this only succeeds loosening the trim a bit - are there any clips or a particular direction to pull in? I don’t want to break anything (or set the airbag off!!).

I seem to remember once the screw is out and the door seal pulled away I pulled the top out first and levered it down as there is part of the lower that slots down between the screen and the dash. As far as I can remember there aren't any other fastenings or clips apart from the screw Thumbs Up Cheers Ian

One thing to consider if someone is using this as a guide, is if your unit has GPS for speed cameras etc. Before you pick the final place and stick it in (with the worlds most stickiest 3m tape) trial it in a few places as I found (the hard way) that when I took my unit out the L322 and put into the L405 the screen/car is much more difficult to get a decent GPS signal

Just found this.

Basically exactly the same way is I did it in my 322, except I just pulled back the door seal velvet and tucked the cable down to the fuse box.

I need to do this on my new one when it arrives so good to know everything will go in the same.

I will have to have a look at the fuse box to get an idea of where that fuse is, bottom Right?? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

@Fin
Do you have photo of the position of your front camera that gave you the best GPS signal? I’ve been sitting in the car holding up the camera without any luck so far.

Many thanks.

@Stan - I spent most of the afternoon trying different positions on the windscreen. I managed to grab a signal once, but couldn’t reproduce it. Didn’t think about turning the vehicle around, great idea, think I’ll go and try that now.

Brilliant how-to, thank you just hard wired mine. I had the same issue as "Nooney" in that the A pillar trim refused to budge (I have been known to be too cack handed so I backed off) a curved wire coat hangar enabled me to feed the cable up into the A pillar.

I have the NextBase camera & found this kit on Amazon, although it arrived with a full size add-a-fuse (I had already ordered a mini add-a-fuse.

Won't the heat reflective windscreen prevent the GPS from getting a signal..?? Pete

@Haylands - Pete, that is the problem I’m trying to prevent. I positioned the camera in the same place as I had it in my L322, which had the heated screen and sun reflective coating (as far as I know) and it was fine. I’m not sure if this L405 has a thicker coating, but I am indeed suffering with a loss of GPS signal.

I have tried relocating the device to the gap in the coating/elements, I think this is there for toll passes, so they don’t suffer the same RF blocking, but still no signal. Fin seemed to have the situation resolved, so I was wondering if he had found the "sweet-spot"

My next step is to get it out into a wide open space and allow it to re-learn/calibrate satellite positions.

Mines here & seems to work OK - telepeage tag one side, dash cam on the other.

Not sure whether having some of it tucked under the black strip thing helps......
