A VERY different turbo noise. Not a Whine 3.6 TDV8

Good Evening All,

So after my introduction in the new member area I have just purchased my first RR.

2007 SPORT TDV8 3.6 with 128K on the clock. Full service history.

There are a few issues that I can handle quite comfortably however I am concerned about my turbos. ESPECIALLY after reading all the horror stories about having to lift the entire body off etc....

So the noise.

When its warmed up its great. it pulls very well and has a bit of black smoke on harsh acceleration but under normal use it does not really smoke at all. same in neutral if I rev it there is very little if any smoke.

If i stop in traffic for a minute then give it a bit of throttle to pull away I get a fluttery whistle type sound. Bit like a tuned up Jap car or something. At first I thought it was a squeaky belt but its load/boost related as when I feather the accelerator i can make the noise change frequency. Its almost like it is in tune with either the variable geometary mechanism

Its very strange and I only noticed it when i pulled away with the drivers window down. Its quite noticable at that point.

after a few seconds it goes away unitl you sit at idle or stop the engine and let is cool a little.

If it is any coincidence I do get it going into LIMP mode if i accelerate hard up a long hill. It is more the whistle i am worried about. Hoses etc i can change/deal with.

Thanks in advance. Hope someone else has come across this.

Carefully check the top i/c hose for a split, commonly underneath.

Thanks for the reply, The strange thing is that the sound is coming from down in the RH side.

When i say whistle I mean it is not constant. I is really hard to describe. Like a flutter for a second as the turbo initially spools up. then is goes away.

Would a leak in the pipework further up cause this a strange sound ?

Tom

Someone else with similar symptoms on a fullfat found that they had a split in the inlet manifold which is not too uncommon. They had whistle and limp mode driving steadily up a hill on a fixed throttle. Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Ok I now know what the difference is. Totally new to RR

So just to put a close to this, I checked over everything again today and found the RH inlet manifold to be cracked.

This is on the "rocker cover" part. the crack is not visible however with some soapy water it was found to be bubbling like crazy. When I rev the engine a very obvious spray was noted along with a high pitched chuffing/whistle/flutter sound.

I believe this engine is the same in the FFRR so although not the same body type or chassis may still be of help to someone!

Signing Out and moving to the other forum.

Good luck with it Tom. You will find a couple of recent threads on this problem on the 3.6. They might give you some indication of the work required.

The MY10 RRS in particular is a nice motor. ______________________________
