United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Stornoway Grey

Mike just adding this from Salter121, he bought a dead 2011 TDV8 and reported:

Quote:
After 115k, following a turbo fail, this L322 Range Rover 4.4 TDV8 threw in the towel; absolutely destroyed the engine. From what I am told by the dealer, the garage they originally took the car to failed them; originally advising to replace the turbos without performing some basic checks for internal damage to the engine. After replacing both turbo's ( Shocked ) and still not being able to get the engine to start they eventually started stripping it down to investigate further.

His full story of re-engining a 4.4TDV8 is here: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic47799.html

Turbos failing on the 4.4 are rare but I guess possible.

This possible turbo failure on an L405 4.4TDV8 is also one to watch: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post492232.html#492232

. Cheers, Greg

Using poly bushes on such a nice car just makes me sad. Nothing ruins a comfortable ride like poly-bushes.
In addition they squeak, do not last any longer than rubber if used in high load Places (caster rod bushes etc.), and they can cause additional stress on the rest of the suspension. I've seen suspension control arms break in half due to use of poly-bushes. 2007 L322 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway

2011 4.4TDV8 40,000 miles - New starter motor. Fiddly but did it myself

I'm going to refurbish the old one and keep it as a spare. It actually works but often doesn't have enough grunt to turn the engine over. Didn't fancy struggling through another winter with it. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Second starter replaced after another two years... so its about 26 months of life you can get out of those.
First one replaced under warranty, now waiting for a big bill as its not covered again obviously.
Need to get a spare one and refurb myself.

The Denso starter motor doesn't lend itself to having the solenoid taken apart to get at the blackened contacts. You have to carefully snip out a welded contact on the outside of the solenoid housing and slide the top off without damaging the connections inside. I looked around for spares and found them for every Denso motor except this one. Just cleaned up the existing ones and put it back together.

I think starting the engine with a reduced battery voltage damages the contacts in the solenoid. Using the FBH could contribute to a lower voltage 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

When my starter motor was replaced (2012 WM) there was a credit/recharge on the bill. I asked what that was about and was told that LR get the starter motors back and refurbish them. The value of the defective motor is credited against the cost of the replacement. So depending on where the work is done there may be less value in keeping the old motor and trying to refurbish it yourself. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Is anyone keeping records still?

2012 4.4 TDV8 79000 miles.

Just changed oil cooler/heat exchanger. No cracks, just lower gasket weeping and then dribbling onto bell housing.
New unit fitted as not uncommon to fail around this mileage.

Auto box oil flush and all transmission lubes changed pre-emptive maintenance.

Small wear on rear hub upper bushes. To be changed at next service.

Arbuckle,
I have stopped logging any faults that are just repeats of all the previously known problems.
The thread is probably more use now as a “what to check” guide to people looking to buy a 4.4tdv8.

BB,was there not talk to publish a list of the range for live values for the values that can be selected?I for one would like to see the live value for engine temp-crusing and then when towing.Charging rate is another one that interest me.

Frans@Yamorna,
I can confirm to you that I am still compiling data for a new post which will be entitled “4.4tdv8 live values”

I have currently got stored on my iPad over 100 screenshots of the iid app showing different live values that I have taken under different conditions, but not including any whilst towing.
It is not easy to get the data, partly because my wife is not always present to hold the iPad and get the screenshots I want, and on several journeys I have accidentally kicked out the iid from the port before getting the pictures.

I am however hoping to publish the first data soon , in the hope that other owners will add to it with their data.
