Fuel economy on a long run...

Hi All,
Just taken her on a long run (180 miles each way) and she averaged 33.5mpg with a potential range of 735miles at one point - 60 mph, manual gear control, cruise and AC on.
Half the efficiency of my banger airport car but my god what a different way to travel.
Any advances?
Kind regards,

I think the turbos seem to spool up at about 1700 rpm or so. I aim to force the car up into 6th as early as possible (40mph or so) and float up to 60mph which equates to about 1600rpm.
If I recall, when I picked the car up last year, on the run home from Northampton, I had 37.5mpg until I left the A3 and then arrived home at 36.5mpg. However, I have yet to see anything like that since - generally she is on the school run, driven by the wife and sits at about 25-26 mpg. '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD
