just mig weld a big nut on - it never fails to work and if you are careful the wheel will remain undamaged, most decent garages / MOT places and agric engioneers could do it for a few £ - literally a 5 minute job

I dont think its that simple as the cap is spinning, so needs to be chizzelled off first.

my range rover came with no locking wheel nut key.

Mate came round with a socket set like in the picture (gators) took all 4 off while i followed and put new locking bolts on.

Took about 2 minutes. 2004 black Vogue TD6

I've no doubt that a Gator socket would have no trouble removing a normal locking wheel nut, but mine was so tight that the locking wheel nut socket cracked, and then the nut cap started to slip with the actual threaded part of the nut refusing to budge.

When the cap spins there is nothing for the gator socket to grip onto. Welding a nut onto the cap wont help either.

Here's a sketch of how the wheel nut is made,

The orange part is the cap
The actual nut is blue
The wheel stud is green
The wheel is pink



So when the locking wheel nut refuses to undo, the only option you have is to chisel the cap off to get to the nut underneath.

As my car was at the dealers today for an inspection 2 service, I warned them that the rear OS locking wheel nut was stuck. They called me at lunch time to let me know the stuck wheel nut was not covered by the approved used warranty, so I would need to pay for a new locking wheel nut, furthermore LR only sell the wheel nuts as a complete set so it would cost me £32. However I would not be charged for the labour to remove nut. Not too bad I thought as I was sure it's a non trivial job to get the old nut off, so I authorised the job.

Later in the afternoon I received another call to let me know that the car would not be ready for collection at 4PM as they were still working on freeing the stuck wheel nut. They also reported that the wheel had been damaged, but they would cover the cost of the wheel refurbishment.

When I collected the car this evening, they apologised again and said there would be no charge for the new locking wheel nuts as they had damaged the wheel.



Although its a sad that my wheel has been damaged, I'm relieved that I've not had to pay out for an an hour or more of labour and then the repair of the wheel. All in all I'm really pleased with the way LR Cambridge handled the situation, I'm sure other some other dealers would not have been so considerate.

did they just hammer and chisel the nut off.... Rolling Eyes they should of drilled the nut off then tackled the stud with the wheel out of the way.
