Hi all

How much worse will my FFRR be if i kept the 22" wheels on it over the winter as oppose to replacing them with genuine 20" wheels?. Will it make vast amounts of difference or will it be negligible such that i wont notice that much?.

I has a RRS S/C last winter with 20" wheels which have a 40 profile high performance tyre on and with 1 exception they did what i needed them to, will 22" with a 35 profile do the same or is 285 x 35 just asking too much?.

The genuine 20" will have factory spec 255 x 50 tyres from pirelli, michelin etc but the 22" are an unknown budget brand so i cant comment on their ability.

I can only tell you what my BMW is like in the snow with rubber band tyres.

To get up the smallest incline (Barley noticable) i had to take a run up, extra weight in the boot, in reverse, with my wife pushing, with the handbrake on.

Low profile tyres and snow? not a good combo __________________

Seriously though, i would expect that of an X5, will a FFRR be the same?.

its not the wheels diameter but the width that is a consideration in snow...from personnel experience ,i had 295/45/20 on last year and found that ploughing through deep snow wasn't a problem, but in shallow slushy snow the range would start to aquaplane and slide about...i would stick to the normal 255/50/20 standard size for general snow driving...

I realised that the wide 285 would be an issue but wasnt sure how it would compare to the 255

I quite surprised at how much people worry about driving in the snow and i have realized one thing it is all about experience.

I guess its much like proper off roading regardless if you have a wee suzuki or an RR, if your no good you'll get the RR no where.

Last year when we had really really bad snow in scotland, and I mean bad to a point the the news was talking of the country being in a gridlock, part motorways closed off, i was out everyday, rescuing all my family and friends who had cars stranded and where stuck in ayr, glasgow etc and I covered 300 miles in that one day and was out every sinle day in the snow. I had many a time had to stop on the motorway because another bmw was stuck and slipping because the traffic was start stop.

what was I driving???? a rear wheel drive e90 320i M sport facelift model.

its all about preparation and driving experience/skill. I reduce PSI to a safe level that would increase traction and keep the car safe etc ... I would gently go everywhere leave safe distances and read the road, avoid areas of very shinny icey looking areas etc etc

I have 22" alloys on my RR and the tyres .... average brand at best (just what came on the car) but i hope by following the same prep and methodolgy it should get me through this winter too.

Dont get me wrong 20" would certainly make a difference and you to feel more comfortable driving in the snow and allow you to "cut" better through the snow but its all relative to how skilled you are driving in the snow as well.. its all goes hand in hand...

so I say keep them on if you dont have 20's available etc, i wouldnt go out my way to buy 20" or source them etc unless you really needed them e.g. if I lived in a rural area, farm etc where it would be tooo much haddle or too riskly ....

anyway thats my 2 pence opinion.....

Get some 19", like the 1's I'm selling Then change the tyres.
