Which of the above am I?!?!

Had the car (06MY Vogue 4.4) a couple of weeks now, and although I'm (a) absolutely loving driving it, (b) aware that things *can* go wrong (as a P38 owner I ought to be!) and (c) old enough not to worry about every last noise, I just want to run these ones past you chaps and see whether it's a common/regular issue or not.

Coming from the LH front of the cabin, somewhere under/behind the glovebox and the CD changer, I have a regular very short burst of a buzz, as if a relay is chattering in and out. This occurs approximately every 20 seconds, for about half a second. Anyone recognise this and know what, if anything, I should be doing about it?

I also have a whistle from the engine area when the car's not fully warmed up. No, there isn't a S/C hiding in there! Sounds for all the world like a vacuum leak but seems to clear when it's fully warm (hmm, could be a vacuum leak then.....)

The "ownership list" so far then is:

- heater fan not working. Not the FSR, I've changed that. It's going in to RCV on Friday to be looked at, hopefully under warranty
- occasional "Reduced Engine Power" warning, which doesn't appear to be accompanied by any actual loss of power, and clears itself after a few seconds
- auto lights seem to have their own opinion on when it's dark and when it's light
- the whistle
- and now this buzzing

I'm aware that the battery can cause all sorts of funnies if it's on it's way out. It has a Varta battery labelled as LR, 110 amp-hour, which sits at around 12.5 volts with the engine off and 13.8 or so with the engine running. Telltale is green, although I do wonder whether, at 44000 miles, it's the original battery. I'll try and get my local shop to put their tester on it next time I'm over there.

It's such a lovely car to drive that so far, I'm prepared to fogive and forget, but it needs to stop it's antics soon!

Haven't got loads of time for a big reply as on my way to the hospital but I have a 4.4 (04) and I have the relay noise. Mine is a traditional relay click though not a buzz. I'm not worried about mine. 04, 4.4V8, Vogue Oslo Blue with LPG.

If something can't be fixed with a hammer....... You have yourself an electrical fault!

The lights are like most auto sensing lights. They are Auto sensing, they were just designed by a woman so come on when they feel like it
IIRC most manufacturers allow a relay position for northern european countries where lights must be on all the time to 'resolve' this issue

The buzz i get from my TD6 is only when i have the key in the run position and sounds a bit like a really tiny PC fan, in the coop i would say it sounds like the air temp sensor fan in the middle of the console and i think the RR is the same as they get dusty and noiser with age like any fan in an open area.


Reduced engine power and other bits could be the battery but they should give it a good test

Is it worth listening around the dash to try and hunt it down or if heavy enough touch locating it as its clicking?

anything in the venture cam holder or even the venture cam itself vibrating.. ..............................

I'll check the cam. It is very much in that area - could even be under the little quarter panel by the passenger's left foot, but I guess without starting to remove trim, I won't know for sure.

Well, an update to this. The buzz is definitely related to the heating system, and in some way related to my lack of fan problem.

This morning I turned the temperature up, knowing there was no fan (it's booked in to look at that Monday). Strangely, there was nothing, no air or heat, coming from the vents at all, even at 70mph. But the buzz stopped. When I stopped the car, ibtested this: heating switched on, no fans or heat but buzzing stops. Heating switched off completely: buzzing resumes.

Guess that's another clue to give the garage, but if anyone has thoughts in the meantime, obviously welcome!

if the blowers dont work but the lights do then it could be the final stage resister... ..............................

Hmm, I changed that for a brand new one from a main dealer - of course there's always the possibility it was faulty from new, I guess.

Did you make sure you connected the plug on the new one properly, they can be a bit awkward  

I'm 6'4" with hands like plates - but I pushed it in as far as it would go and until it clicked, so I'd hope so; or is there something else I should be checking??
