Rear suspension bushes

I have a 2003 L322 with both upper & lower rear hub bushes worn. The question is can I remove the hub and take it to a machine shop to have the bushes pressed into place or do I have to remove the whole rear suspension arm, air bag etc? I have got all the parts OEM which came to just under £100 for all 4 bushes which isn't too bad I though.

Does anyone know of an easier way to do this job?

You will need to remove the driveshaft to get the hub off, not easy unless you have access to an air chisel or similar to push the shaft through the hub. Also the top bush bolts are eccentric and adjust the suspension geometry, they need to be marked before removing and once new bushes fitted it is recommended to have the geometry checked.

Best do the bushes in-situ Thumbs Up

Thanks for the info 47p2 Very Happy I have an electric impact gun which should get the hub nut off. How can you do the job in-situ when nobody seems to make an extractor?

There are several posts on the forum about removing the bushes with a home made extractor, use search to find them. I 'think' mattstevenson2005 did a write up on making an appropriate tool from tubing and threaded rods.

I used a Saab bush extractor on mine, it worked well but really did take it to it's limit. The bottom bush is the most difficult to remove, I used a 6' steel tube to persuade the bush to move.

Good pair of axle stands is required Thumbs Up

I have the axle stands & all the gear just no experience with this car, I'm an ex mechanic. Love this car but it's bankrupting me Rolling Eyes Did the front passenger side air bag last weekend & had it MOT'd yesterday & it failed on the hub bushes Rolling Eyes Just to confirm both the top and bottom bushes can be removed & are part of the hub assembly?

Hope to be able to drive this car soon as I seem to spend every weekend working on it, I've only had it a month . . . .

So far I've done

steering reach motor
suspension pump
passenger side airbag
CD player (CD's stuck in)
front drop link
rear engine coolant hose (blew a leak on the test drive after doing the front air shock) Big Cry
after doing the coolant hose I filled the coolant up with anti freeze and the radiator started weeping (so did I) along the bottom edge, still need to do this one.
and many other bits I've probably forgot about.

If anyone was thinking about buying one I'd say you either need very deep pockets or a very nice set of Snap-On tools Thumbs Up

As an ex mechanic you should manage it in situ no problem then.

I used a tool similar to the one in the image below along with a couple of large sockets. Tighten up the rodded section, hit the hub a couple of sharp blows with a heavy hammer, tighten up the rodded section, hit the hub.........keep going until the bush comes out.

No space to get a good hit with the hammer on the lower bush and that was the reason I used a 6' tube, tighten up the rodded section, hit the tube and repeat until the bush is out. The lower bushes have retaining clips, remember to purchase new ones and remove the old ones before trying to remove the bush. they are removed by pressing out towards the front of the vehicle
