It sounds like your fuel tank is not venting, the hose is either blocked or wedged against something, limiting air pressure. Worst case is a split high on the fuel tank or the vent hose itself.

If here in Oz I would definitely say sap or gum from a tree, or pollen etc from some flowering tree. Not sure in the UK, but that's what it looks like to me !

What year is your wife's car ?
Early model L322's had a front diff problem that led to a international recall which unfortunately ended on the 1st Jan 2012 ! It may have missed the cut?

Just be careful to measure how much oil goes in. The old adage of when it spills it's right ! doesn't apply for the L322. The only car I know where this is the case.

I had a similar problem; it turned out to be the the Intake Manifold gasket ! See if you can see any oil around the intake manifold.
