Autoglym used to sell the Extra Gloss Protection (with the gold label) to go on after the Super Resin polish. ........been a while since I've looked at the shelves in Halfords..........that is supposed to seal over the polish.

It's my belief that car polishes etc either cut a bit back, and make it shiny, or don't do anything but put wax on and protect.

No good doing the latter if the paintwork isn't immaculate before you start.

I used the full Zymol system on my M5's and the results are stunning. Not cheap though, as you'll be the wrong side of £100 to get up and running.........

I still have some Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection left after buying a few bottles back in the mid 90's.

Turtle Wax Diamond Shine also do a similar sealer which works well, but not as good on dark colours, in my opinion.

To be honest, the last wax I gave my RR a few weeks ago was using Zymol and it again really impressed me with the depth of shine.

Autoglym uses very mild cutting agents to shift dead paint. A high carnuaba content wax won't and should give a decently hard shell of protection.

The specialist I bought my E55 from last year revealed to me that he uses in vehicle preparation an Autoglym vinyl and tyre dressing spray on the paint. This has a high silicone content and the paint on my E55 was indeed very smooth and deep in colour (metallic black) when I viewed. The silicone makes the paint seem smooth, but it's really the silicone doing its job. But as the silicone wore off after successive cleans using Meguiars detailing spray, the paint revealed a real need for claying and polishing. The richness of the black also diminished slightly, as one would expect. Once the paint was clayed and polished, it has remained silky smooth and to a very deep gloss black ever since.

The no-water cleaner talked about also uses silicone. Sure, the results are going to look good, but it can hide paint contaminants. On all my cars, I've simply used spray detailer and then gone over them quickly with a light waxing. Or used Meguiars Quick Wax spray, which is excellent even on dark colours. But all my work is after the paint's been recently clayed and waxed. Not only is the finish better, but smoother paint is MUCH easier to clean. Si. <This is my name.

I eat rat poison.

Conclusion: I'm quite pleased with this stuff !

- Washed the car twice
- Clay barred - much easier than I thought and it only took a few hours to do the whole car (although the wheels then took over an hour the next day)
- Autoglym super resin polish (red)
- PTFE wax (it was getting dark and I didn't have time for a second coat of resin polish)

I still have the windows to polish (the clay bar took off loads of cr*p which was not noticeable before however) and driving in the rain on Sunday for a couple of hours means it needs another wash!

I think that the acid test for the wax will be after a couple more washes, to see how the water still beads...

Thats excellent news.......and due to this thread, I now own a microfibre drying towel ! A bit off topic I know, so I shall see how that goes on the next wash.

I polished mine on Friday night with some old Autoglym super resin polish, and now I can't make my mind up whether its better than the bottle of Zymol at £12.99 from Halfords, which I have used for a few years.

Definately not as good as the "proper" Zymol carbon waxes, but then its cheaper and faster to wax........

Is there a specific PTFE polish you have, or are they pretty similar ?

Cheers

I always use the Simonize Hard Wax - This stuff:

And I reckon it's brilliant. OK, like all waxes you need to clean and polish the car first, then apply this, buff it off (hard work and the first time you do a new car will take > half a day) but it lasts forever, and putting several coats on really builds up the shine.

You can buy it from Halfords for about £7 and a tin will last you ten years or more!

If you search on eBay for "PTFE Car Polish - The Best Car Wax Isn't Car Wax" - that's the stuff that I used, although I suspect that the rock hard Simoniz that Simes suggested will be tougher (if it's hard to put on surely it must last longer!) and for £7 it's worth a try next time!

Oh hell!

I love this talk. I truly do.

So I've gone and bought myself some Autoglym High-Definition wax. It's hardly the most expensive stuff on the planet, but hasn't had a bad word said about it.

My FF will be its first recipient.

Very tempted by that Simoniz stuff as well. Would be ideal for my 110 and Series. Si. <This is my name.

I'm not a fan of Autoglym products but their High-Definition Wax is excellent

I used to use Simoniz Wax and it is a great product, but it is just too much hard work when there are better products which are easier to work with and for not a lot extra money.

Probably best not to Google "Polish Porn", but you know you need to try the PTFE polish too - just for a balanced view Laughing

Everyone knows I am fanatical about cleaning my cars (albeit not as often as I used to do it), I use Meguiars for the paint clean, clay and polish stages, and recently started using the Autoglym High definition Wax as the top coat sealant.

Recommendations?

I'd like something that lasts like the Simonize - leaves the car looking wet it's so shiny, but that can be done in 1/2 an hour!

I've tried the Turtle-Wax Ice - that seems quite good and leaves a nice shine, but doesn't last as long - maybe three or four washes and it's stopped beading.

Can't access the Halfords site at the moment, but yesterday I paid £29 for a 150g tub of Autoglym HD including cloth and applicator. And free carriage.

Not sure how that compares to Halfords prices, but it seemed OK to me.

Fanatical... Tell me about it! I've called my house Autoglym Towers. Not registered, but paid £silly for a bespoke brass plaque. Si. <This is my name.

OK, i'll probably get slated for this but will someone quickly explain what claybar is and does please...

I used to fanatically clean and polish my old cars every weekend with endless amounts of Autoglym... Now i guess ive got a little less time and more cars (currently own 3) i use a mobile valeter... Have heard the term claybar recently but dont have the first idea (keep having visions of my FF with a facepack like the Mrs) Rolling with laughter

Still use countless bottles of armorall though as them tyres must be shiney! Old habits n all...

Craig Thumbs Up
