Tickover Query

Hi to one and all.
I am new to the site found it by chance, and must say I am impressed by the help I have received. The other site I belong to where not as forthcoming. My other car is a P38 which I have had since 18 months old and has been very reliable.
To begin with I didn't like the shape of the L322 but now I must say I am smitten. I was very fortunate to obtain my Vogue from a client of mine who emigrated. He was the sort that lavished whatever was needed on the car, so I know its history and waht has been spent on it.
ANyway, enough of the babble, I do have a little problem with her. Normally the tickover is at 500rpm hover occasionally it stays at around 900rpm and does not drop. It only seems to happen when the weather is a bit crap.
Could it be something to do with a heat sensor?

If you have the 4.4 BMW V8 then I get the same issue very occasionally, interesting I get it whether running on LPG or Petrol...

When I first start up the engine runs at around 1100rpm for approx 10 seconds and then drops to normal, but occasionally the idle will rise to 8-900 I only notice it when manoeuvring in car parks etc as it goes a bit too fast etc.

At low speed manoeuvring does the ECU compensate for low revs when it needs increased power for the PAS? Discovery 4 HSE

Increased power should match increased load - so you should never notice the revs go up, but likewise you shouldnt notice them go down either. Unless something's going wrong with this calculation and that's why it goes screwy sometimes...

Hi.
Stewart I have a 4.4 petrol.

Today it is fine. Upon starting up it ran at 1100/1200 for about 30 seconds then dropped to 500rpm. I have not noticed any difference when using sterring in slow manouver.
There doesn't seem to be any reason why, only I have noticed it is higher when the weather is poor or raining. That's why I wondered if it was something to do with heat sensor.
When it is higher, I also notice a shudder when engaging drive, which I presume is due to the higher rev?
I had a similar problem with my Saab Carlsson that used to do the same thing in bad weather.

Any sort of shudder often points to coil pack related problems. Check the rocker covers for oil leaks as the oil pools around the coil packs/plugs. Have you changed the PCV hoses yet? If not they will also be leaking oil all over the place by now.

Thanks for that. I think I maight have explained it wrongly. Its the same as when you engage gear manually, on a car when engine reving high.

Also there are no leaks. The guy who owned the car previously was a Main Agents dream! Anything thay suggested was agreed to and paid for.
Prior to me getting the car there was a knock at the front end. It went into 5 different dealers who diagnosed, Gearbox (this was replaced new). Steering Rack (replaced new). Both front suspension struts (Replaced new). Suspension arms and bushes (replaced new) Anti Roll BAr (replaced new). A small fortune later and guess what the noise was still there........! I suggested that I take it to someone I knew.
I took it to James French and they dignosed N/S Wheel Bearing. Now there is no knocking noise.........!
It fails to amaze me how the Main Dealers can not diagnose such a small thing. TO be fair in their defence, it did not sound like or make a noise like a wheel bearing.
Anyway thanks for the input. I still think it must be something to do with a sensor, because even if you switch engine off leave it for a while it still revs higher.

how about cleaning out the idle speed control valve they get very gummed up ive cleaned loads on other makes of cars Thumbs Up Thumbs Up onto no6 Range Rover

Nigel, It may be worth seeing if any fault codes have been flagged up. James French could check this for you, maybe one of the temp. senders is faulty.
