If you want it in the spare wheel well, around 95 litres, which gives up to 76 useable. Max range around 280. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

With LPG tanks you have to take into account the 80% rule. The tanks are fitted with a floater/shut off valve so the filling stops at (approx.) 80% of the tank volume. This is a safety rule. It is technically possible to increase the volume by bending the floater up a bit but that reduces your margin of safety of course and I would not recommend it, partly because the gain is very little.

So the net volume of a tank is approx. 80% of the gross volume. Other options are tanks (thin cylindrical) tanks underneath the car or a bigger tank in the trunk (taking up luggage space).

I had a GMC with 300 liter in gross tank capacity (all inside, it was a GMC Vandura High Top Conversion) and that gave me almost 1000 kms with the same fuel consumption as the S/C. I don't think that you can get that much in a FFRR (even if you install multiple tanks in it). The GMC had two 120 liter and one 60 liter tank in it, all hooked up together to the single converter (or evaporator) and filler.

If range is important I would suggest a trunk tank (say 80 or 100 liters) behind the rear seat or against one of the sides plus a wheel well tank. Having tanks underneath is fine for a "road going" car but for a 4wd it could cause issues with going offroad.

And I know about issues with leaking LPG tanks (actually hose and shut off valve), your car ends up on a tow truck with fire department and police escort to an old abandoned airfield in the munitions loading and engine test area to vent off (I was lucky only the 60 liter tank leaked and took only 4 days to vent off). And you end up following the column in a small Suzuki Swift and checking it every day on a bicycle to see if you can take it home again Smile. It cost only 100 Euros for the new hose/valve and labour to fix it, plus 60 liter of LPG wasted (at 0.70 Euro cents per liter, the Euro was still quite strong then by the way Smile ).

Good luck with deciding what to do Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Thin cylindrical tanks that fit underneath the car.

Any thoughts on where these could be sourced from?

I would be interested in looking into increasing my LPG capacity without having a tank inside the boot.

Must say I was a little surprised but being a trusting soul, I assume there must be such a product as per the previous post.

If there was, I would be investigating to what safety standards these were designed to.

Yes I appreciate what you are saying and I certainly wouldn't entertain anything that could be dangerous to myself or my family.

In Holland they are very common, the underslung tanks, but I agree that they are far from ideal. As you may know Holland has a long history with LPG in cars and a lot of systems were developed there, including the thin underslung tanks.

But as Stan and I tried to explain, a leaking LPG tank or hose, creates a dangerous situation. For me that led to the story of the abandoned airfield, although that had nothing to do with tank damage.

If you don't do any offroading and the tanks can sit high enough under the car, then you can consider it but I strongly recommend not to do it if there is even a remote chance that you will go offroad. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Saw this tank on an Audi S8 so it should in theory fit the FFRR Whistle

i have a 95 ltr in mine which is the biggest you can get in the spare wheel well , however in order to fit this you have to remove the 2 metal rails that are spot welded to the floor that the air suspension pump was bolted to by drilling out the spot welds ,by removal of these rails it allows the tank to sit about 2" inches lower otherwise the cover over the spare wheel well will not sit in its proper position , and who wants an ugly lpg tank in the boot space Smile 1990 3.5 v8 defender

I have had bigger tanks in the boot space, nt a proble if properly covered up. But getting a 95 ltr one in the spare wheel space is brilliant. Take it you just have to use one of those foam cans in case you get a puncture?
