Think I've found the source of my occasional starting issues.

If the engine is hot it sometimes takes some churning over.

If I don't use the car for over a week it takes some churning over.

If it's original, the pump's 10 years old and done 100k miles. Have ordered a new one.

I changed my pump today.
Last weekend it failed and car wouldn't start, gave it a light tap and car started. Also occasionally when accelerating to 70 from a slip road, about 60 I loose power, then the car picks up, I can only put this down to the pump struggling to keep pressure up under acceleration.

My first indication of pump failure was what felt like a slight lack of power when I put my foot down on the accelerator at around 65mph to do an overtake manoeuvre, the engine felt like it had cut out for about 3 or 4 seconds then all went back to normal and full throttle was reinstated. It never played up again until a week or so later when it wouldn't start, then I hit the pump with a spanner it kicked into life. The new pump seems to have made the whole vehicle a much smoother car to drive
