Colour Coded Wing Mirrors DIY Upgrade

A little upgrade job for the weekend

Removed main covers
Removed puddle lamps
Scrubbed with scotch brite
Sanded with 1200 wet and dry
Degreased with alcohol wipes
Red primer 2 coats
Sand down with 1200 wet and dry
2 400ml cans of touch up paint from Duckworths
(I think you are supposed to sand again here but I didn't)
1 400ml of lacquer (which comes with the touch up cans)
Baked in oven for 3 hours @ 30 degrees

Once really hardened off will get a three stage Magueirs work over

Lacquer is a right pain to spray, doesn't come out like paint, and you really have to lay it on thick to get a gloss, making it difficult to avoid runs.

Colour match is pretty good given ten years have passed, although I guess you could spot the difference if used on the same panel as original.

See what a cat did to my A pillar in second photo Evil or Very Mad

Here is a before upgrade:

Passenger side:

Drivers Side

I believe this is a worthwhile upgrade, cost @ £20. Colour coded mirror covers I have seen at @ £95 (not that there are any in my colour - black or silver only - wonder why that is Twisted Evil ) .

Nice. Did that on my Vogue Td6 in Bonatti a few years ago, simply took the covers off and dropped them at the bodyshop while they where painting the bumpers (scratched corners)

You may respray you A pillars or just change them both.

Also you could use AutoGlym' vinyl cream on the black trims, including the mirrors' unpainted parts (spray it on a rag then apply; not on the parts though) l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

You need to stop rubbing pussy against your A pillar Laughing Laughing

Did you use a plastic primer for the mirrors?

My mirrors don't seem to look like that - ie nothing to unclip and colour code.

Mine look like a complete unit.......

Does yours have after market covers on, and you have painted those ?

If you see what I mean ?

Thanks

I stoop corrected.

They do look like that.

Not sure I'm confident yanking the unit apart.

Take it you have to remove the mirror from the door etc first, or can you pull them apart in situ ?

My car is going in the bodyshop at the end of the month for an upper tailgate swap, so could have them do the mirrors also..... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

@ verydisco

Am sure those cat scratches will buff out

@ 47p2

no, just normal primer - we'll have to see if it holds!

@ mjdronfield

they come apart fairly easily - see here:

Yes, remove "back" cover after unclipping the puddle lamp connector. One torx screw holds the lamp in the cover (or you can leave it there and mask the lens). .

Love your work Joe90. I have already done a modified version of your roof rack solution, and I will give this one a go also.
