Special Programs Off ?

Hi all

Have been driving trouble free for months and then last night the double ding, engine fault on the dash but no warning lights and special program's off come up on the central screen. Pulled over, switch off and back on, reset drive away and a mile down the road happened again and again for the next six miles. There are no warning lights coming on just double ding, engine fault in the dash screen and special program's off on the centre screen, anybody got any ideas? Steve B

I suggest to check for all the fuses to be "tight", wiggle/push them into the sockets. Check earth/ground connections and spray with electrical contact cleaner. Clean if necessary (corrosion reduce voltage a lot by creating resistance and 12 V does not need a lot of resistance to go down a few volts), take connection off, sand/brush to bright metal and apply light coat of vaseline or contact cleaner. Same for the battery clamps, take them off, clean them with sandpaper as well as the battery poles themselves, light vaseline and back on again. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I fitted a new battery only six months ago. I will double check all the connection again as I did suspect a bad connection somewhere. Like all RR problems, there is not always a pattern to them reoccurring. This fault reoccurred seven times in 10 miles then seemed to clear and I had trouble free driving for another 10 miles. I will check all again this morning Steve B

Checked fuses all ok, no corrosion, all fitted securely. Battery has no corrosion and all connections clean and tight. Went for a drive and about two miles out I got up to 70mph and ding ding same again. Engine fault but no warning lights and special program's off flashes up on the centre screen and into get home mode, crawling along. Off and on and all clears.

Guess it is into the service on Monday ? Steve B

Checked all one more time and still no different. All ok until I boot it up to 70+ then fault comes on. I have read it could be the turbo or EGR valves....any ideas? Steve B

I have been getting a good puff of black smoke when I kick down or accelerate hard, is this a sign of blocked or faulty EGR valves? I had one replaced only 10 months ago.

If I drive my RR gently and dont exceed 50 mph no fault occurs, it only happens when I boot it or drive 50mph plus. Steve B

Mines just done exactly the same thing.

Is the turbo hose easily accessible ?

I've just arrived in La Plagne and don't fancy the drive home, so was hoping I could tape it up

Mine was the left side main turbo hose on top of the engine. Very easy to replace. Mine was split about 2" long on its underside, hence i didn't see it until I really started pulling and pushing the hoses around. It only happened at speed when the turbo pressure went up and opened the split creating an un-balanced air flow and then the double ding. Lift bonnet, take off engine cover and really give the two turbo hoses a good check over including the hose clamps. Hose was about £25.00 and 15 minutes fitting. mind you it took two days of trial and error to find the split in the first place.

As a temporary measure if you find the split tape it up with gaffer tape and don't drive too hard, should get you home. Steve B

Thanks - I will have a look - I got the error message twice on the motorway from Lyon - loss of power, over to the hard shoulder, off and on again and it seemed fine. After the second time, I dropped the speed, we were nearly there anyway.

On the mountain roads I noticed that the guy behind me was getting a nice cloud of black smoke as we came out of each hairpin.

Fingers crossed its just a hose now.

I can't figure out which hoses I need to check. It's -12 at the moment so none of them are particularly flexible either Smile

They are dirty enough though - its cost the hotel a towel so far.

Is it the ones that run right from the front ?
