Eurotunnel and LPG

I seem to recall reading on here a while back, that you can't take an LPG converted car in the Eurotunnel. Why is that, when you can take a caravan on there with LPG bottles in the front? 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

This all came about after the horrendous fire in the tunnel a few years back. Yes, they do walk round checking the usual suspects for filler caps etc, the likes of big 4x4's that don't sound like diesels, so you are very likely to get picked up, to the point that you probably have less than 1% chance of making it through undetected.

As for the difference between caravan bottles and converted cars, this is all about capacity & safety mechanisms.

One average 4x4 holds 8 times the amount of gas in a full 6kg bottle so there's not as much of the stuff around. Also, bottles are only filled to 75% of the actual capacity and have no pressure relief valve so they're all safe up to a certain temperature - i.e. they won't CAUSE a fire by leaking.

Cars on the other hand have safety blow off valves which can leak and then there's the quality of the installation. Anyone who's ever seen a poor LPG install on a car will know how dangerous the things can be, and leaking gas (propane is heavier than air) can accumulate underneath cars ready to explode at the first source of ignition, i.e. when the car is started up.

An imperfect science for sure, but the main logic is there if you understand the problems and risks.

I had a tutor in Uni who was involved in the investigation about the fire years back. Was interesting from a scientific way about how things happened. daft little fact about the euro tunnel fire... there was a lorry full of kelloggs cereal in the fire, apparently the boxes burned better than the cornflakes. go figure. V8 or else ...

Yeah, not a risk really but Eurotunnel don't differentiate at that level. if it's fitted they assume it's full.

And don't forget, if it's registered with dvla on the V5C then it will show up when they scan your number plate, which I'm sure they do for security reasons.

I think I read somewhere that dual fuel cars are coming up for re/review soon.

But if the car was completely log only then they are allowed on, it's just if it's dual. As I believe.

Im guessing he means LPG only as there are some...
Most installers dont reccomend it unless you have a lot of coolant in the system to stop the vaporiser freezing or a nice short heat circuit to get it warmed up quick... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I guess we knew it was meant to be LPG, but please enlighten me as to cars or road vehicles that run purely on LPG, and don't have an alternative fuel to initially start them.
Also, why would LPG only vehicles be allowed and not alt. fuel ones.

Any modern LPG vehicle should be able to start and run on LPG.

I used to start my coop on it all the time and only ever used the pricey stuff when i knew i would want the most power possible.

to start it on LPG i just held down the button. Though im sure the installer said ti can be programmed out, thus negating petrol entirely. But its left in to make sure the water starts circulating for when the weather is really cold. Not such a problem in a high strung 5 pot 2 litre turbo engined monster or an FFRR i'd imagine.

There are things such as forklifts that run on LPG entirely and im sure there are cars that have been fully converted just none are springing to mind Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
