Broadband

Heh...

Just been round to my next door neighbour. He's getting fed up with his broadband as he can't watch films or anything over it... He's on the BT network and despite being only a couple of kilometres from the exchange, the cables travel 7KM's to get there, and to make matters worse, some of them are aluminium... Best speed he can connect at is 1 Mb/s and throughput is miles worse than that. Funny thing is, the box at the end of the road has a BT Openreach sticker on it saying Fibre Optic broadband is here... It's bloody not!

Showed him my stats from Virgin Smile

I think he might swap away from the crumbling ruin of a network that is BT...

Swap over to what though?? Rolling Eyes

If you mean Virgin Media, the Frankenstein created out of Diamond Cable, Telewest and a few other local projects, well that's just as much of a mis-managed mess as BT, only the customer service is worse.

We're switching to BT fibre optic next week. Our speed will go from 3Mb to just over 30Mb and its £6 a month cheaper to Thumbs Up

So thats £6 a month extra I can spend on the FF Very Happy

If he has the cab at the end of his street he will still be running on the ADSL2/2+ from the exchange as you need to pay to move onto it.
I have seen single NON BT VDSL lines running at 120meg downstream and 40up!!! Then there was a bonding project sticking 2+ together and that was crazy, maxing out the fibre from the cab when they stuck 7 together Very Happy

get him onto the BT fibre Smile

Virgin, well i worked for Telewest for a while and the network is much stronger all in. CS may be a pile of outsourced poo but the biggest let down is the STB's. they really need to get their act together as its shocking going from sky or freeview to a virgin box. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I think he feels that after 10 years of rubbish broadband BT have had all the chances (and money) they are going to get!

We've got the VM Tivo box - and it just works really well.

The Tivo part makes up for the lack of speed and the GUI you get with a Sky+HD box I reckon. Their only saving grace Wink FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Shocked Really ? I think the Tivo box is significantly better than the Sky HD.

I have 3 of them and a regular v+ box and have been really happy with them. Prior to that I had 3 Sky HD's & a Sky+ - the HD boxes were just awful, forever crashing and in need of a re-boot.

Things may have moved on, but the Tivo interface is great - and the fact that things like iPlayer & other ondemand services are integrated is just a bonus Thumbs Up

I had Tivo, the original when it was here in the UK on lifetime or monthly subs. It is an amazing if not fantastic system that has a loyal following and great dev community. However virgins par for course is cr4ppy box'es built to the lowest possible penny without any regard to quality or longevity. Its been this way for years and has been repeated time and time again with their other hardware offerings.

The Sky+HD boxes i've had have been samsungs and have been great things, fast and never faultered, just upgraded Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

The (newer) VirginMedia Tivo boxes are Samsung also - seem to work fine.

I imagine the Tivo is fine once you've figured out how to operate it, and iplayer and channel 5 catchup and stuff is integrated into the SKY HD box now, so they are getting there, just slightly slower........ 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Probably true - although I found the Tivo box was totally intuitive - just worked. Searching for programmes or just programme content is great as it searches the current schedule, plus Virgin Catchup, iPlayer, ITVPlayer, Channel4's version and Channel 5's and YouTube.
