when you put your key in it should make a clicking /whir noise, this indicates the gear release and immobiliser are off. ... - .- -.

When you stick the key in, the immobilizer "releases" the electric steering lock (that is the click you hear in the steering column).

Yes it does do that 'normal' sound, but this is a different one it makes (when the key is in the cranking position)

Is it the chatter from the starter solenoid? Your new starter might be duff |

The sound is from the immobiliser - you can also feel the high pitched vibration if you hold it when it's buzzing while cranking.

I don't know the L322 system, but I would have thought it unusual for an immobiliser to make a sound or vibrate |

Yes, I'm thinking I may need to bite the bullet and book it in at the dealers (If it will start) |

Unfortunately the spare key has never worked since I got the car 2 yrs ago, battery was flat at the time, and when I replaced it, it wouldn't work - so it's been kicking about in the back of drawer ever since (another job I never got round to doing)

So when you move the key to the cranking position the starter motor does not turn?
