I took my 2006 RRSC to the main dealer this week with the following problem (amongst others), they couldn't find anything wrong so its going back in next week for 3 days for further investigation. Anyone have any ideas in the meantime? Any help would be much appreciated!

On about 3 occasions in the last week and one occasion about 3 weeks ago the car has done the following –

Driving along normally at motorway speeds for 30 mins or so, then slow down to 10 – 20MPH and when accelerating the engine revs quite loudly but the car doesn’t seem to move forward as quickly as it should. Very difficult to describe but it is almost like the car has put itself into a limp mode or very low range or is being driven with the handbrake or brakes fully locked on, although there is no smell of burning.

I'm pretty sure its not just a case of the car defaulting to a higher gear than it should as when I switch to manual and ask it to pull off in 3rd it doesn't feel like I'm replicating the fault that is occurring.

No warning lights come on when it does this.

The car does still change gear but seems to rev higher than it should in each gear. The car does allow manual gear shifting during this fault occurring. When the car is stopped and immediately re-started it seems to clear this fault and the car drives perfectly normally again.

I have also been having HDC Fault and Transmission fault warnings and I'm not sure if these are related. The main dealer couldn't diagnose the cause of the HDC or Transmission fault warnings either, other than to say the module behind the battery box isn't communicating with the ECU for some reason.

Which garage have you been using and can they replicate the fault or not?

It sounds like it may be a torque convertor fault IMHO? '09 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto for the Mrs

Stratstones, Hanley, the car has been maintained by them since new and to be fair they have been pretty good, although this is the first real couple of problems the car has had and I'm far from impressed by their approach to these particular problems.

I'm not sure they really tried to replicate the problem, instead they just said they had re-set some values?

They did get the HDC fault to flash up when they had it but they couldn't get the relevant module to communicate.

What could be wrong with the torque converter? Would that be something that could occurr intermitently?

I can only recommend that you call a transmission specialist but from what you have said it sounds like that could be the problem.

I had a not disimilar problem on my TD6 where it felt like the clutch was going (if it had a clutch, i.e then I thought it was the TC also)

Turned out it was the low pressure fuel pump, the one mounted outside of the tank, needed a new one, cost about £400, car back to normal afterwards. Discovery 4 HSE

Got to agree it sounds like maybe a slipping clutch.

Get that checked and also as per Doc above re the torque conv. TDV8 HST Sport **Current**

Thanks for the suggestions, here's a bit more info -

1. I may be imagining this but the feeling I get when this fault is occurring is very similar to the way the car performs for about 30 seconds after cold start up, is there some sort of cold start mode that it could be putting itself back into?

2. Also not sure if this is an important point but whenever this fault occurrs the car will tick over at 1000 revs as oppossed to the normal 500, its almost like the engine is racing for some reason, this is definately linked to the fault but would this be a sign of a problem with the torque converter?

3. I had an LPG conversion about 5 weeks ago, could this be affecting the fueling as per RRUK's response? This fault does occurr when on petrol or gas and switching between the two during the fault doesn't make any difference.

4. Again this may be nothing but I'm sure when I started it this morning it got to normal engine temperature within about a mile, the strange thing is that 10 minutes later the engine temp gauge had dropped to just above cold before steadily returning to normal - why would it cool down so much when the manner of my driving didn't really change?

Car goes back in tomorrow, just hope they get to the bottom of it this time!

1) could the s/c belt be slipping
2) by running on gas with the s/c engine could it be running lean i.e not enough fuel or too low octane onto no6 Range Rover

how many kilometers on the clock ?
gearbox oil is old and becomes too hot, electronic shifts into a fault mode,... Could it be that fault? XJC, RRV8, Series1 86 and 107% of real pleasure

Turns out it is the engine fan that I am hearing.

The garage are going to try a thermostat, lets hope that sorts it.

The car has recently had a new radiator and header tank, I wonder if the two are related.

Thermostat done and seems to have cured the fan coming on when it shouldn't, however, it seems this fault wasn't connected to the HDC. Car is back in the delears for further investigation.

The OBD check doesn't seem to be an option to diagnose the cause of the HDC fault as when the fault occurrs the ECU can't communicate with the HDC/Transmission control module, therefore can't tell it whats wrong.

Any thoughts?

the hdc is linked to the abs and the steering angle sensor have you had any faults with steering / repairs and have you turned the steering lock to lock while running to recal the steering angle sensor  onto no6 Range Rover
