Im thinking about getting another 4x4 for a change for a while.
I've Been looking at a 2005 4.8 exclusive BMW x5 and a vw touareg altitude.
I will be towing with it so maybe best to find a touareg with air suspension
Anyone got any opinions on them or ever had one ?

I had the VW Touareg Altitude before the Rangie. 57 plate vs the 08 plate FFRR I have.

Now I may get shot for this...... In some respects it was a better car. With the 3.0 TDi V6 it pulled like a train, felt faster than the FFRR although don't think it was, much smoother autobox, interior felt more modern, satnav info transferred to central screen etc(Altitude only), it handled corners far better, comically reliable (nothing in 100,000 miles apart from right at end) vs a blown inter cooler pipe and sticking calipers so far on RR. Towed my car trailer plus car brilliantly (mate borrowed it for a Nurburgring run, reported rock steady mile after mile at 90mph with trailer/Impreza on rear on autobahn a). Clearly also a lot cheaper to buy.

Downsides, felt much smaller inside and was just a car, the FFRR puts a smile on your face each time you get it, a sense of well being somehow. Didn't have some of the luxuries of the Rangie, FBH, rear heated seats etc, for sure would not be in the same league off road although it ploughed through the snowy Welsh hills just fine.

In short a very logical choice for a 4x4 if you buy your cars based on logic. I wouldn't go back! I'd feel cheated every morning I got into it and miss my Rangie. Humans eh?! Go figure!  Lloyd Barnes

Having used one for towing 10m boats I would say Toyota Landcruiser full size in either Petrol/LPG or Diesel amazing vehicles and just not the kudos of FFRR but as a workhorse unbeatable, thinking of getting an old hi mileage one with LPG to jack up and go green laning as well as play thing when it snows. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

Daughters got the ML Merc version not to keen on it , those are more for women just a notion that I have had for a while as the GL's in the 420 and 500 guise seem to be pretty good ====================================

I have a bit of a funny situation. Our Landcruiser is probably the least reliable Landcruiser/Toyota in the world. If it wasn't a company car, I would have given it the boot ages ago. That car has cost more in repairs over the past 6 years than a new one would cost.

The FFRR on the other hand is much more reliable, a lot more luxurious and comfortable.

The newer Landcruisers are more comfortable but still not a match for the FFRR (bearing in mind I am comparing my May 2005 built FFRR to a 2 yr old Landcruiser now !!). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

The first one you linked to is actually overpriced as well!! It's a pre facelift model with slightly poorer interior plus I think the older version of the 3.0 engine. The face lifts are the ones to go for. You can tell by shape of headlights.

I sold mine about 9 months ago for £12,250. 57 plate face lift grey Altitude, spotless but about 10k miles more. Selling it now I reckon I'd be lucky to get £11k.

Ok thanks for info about the facelifts. I only put a link to that one for a picture of an altitude.
When did the facelift start ? I'm hoping to get a cheaper tax one, I may need to get a 55 plate or an early 06.

BTW, if you go for a 3.0 Touareg with 80k+ miles, check the inlet manifolds have been replaced (or the engine management light hasn't been disconnected). It's a known fault on that VAG engine.

Each of the two manifolds has an air bypass system with electrically controlled flaps. The spindles wear slightly over time. Doesn't in any way affect the running of the car but the system senses it has to move the electric motor more to open the valves and so puts on the engine management light. No solution but to replace the manifolds. £500 plus fitting per manifold.

Happened just before I sold mine, bummer paying a grand to turn off a light (fitted them myself) but unsaleable otherwise. one to check for.  Lloyd Barnes
