Altenator failure?

Dont panic Mr Mainwaring..... Its not gone bang.

I was wondering how common the altenator failure is on the tdv8, i have heard of them going pop at 60k.

The reason i ask is that im off to france with the plastic palace in aug. im on 52k now and will no doubt be pushing 60k by then, a tiny tiny bit concerned that it will go pop in france. Big Cry

Does anyone know what they cost to replace, ive seen them for about £200, any ideas on the labour, on my Fiesta it would take 1/2 hour, think it may take a little longer on the ff.

I am pondering doing it anyway as a preventative measure if its not too dear. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine went at about 90k. Really quite common according to the tech and was repaired under warranty .

Mine went around 50K when the car was 4 years old, was replaced under landrover approved used warranty. The workshop manager at the time told me the alternator used on the earlier TDV8's was not the best and that mine was replaced by the newer 'improved design' model.

Right, im going to give the local indy a call and get a price, quite a bit of time left yet, and its unlikely to go pop in the last 9 days of warranty i have left.

Oooo to renew warranty dilema is now facing me. Noo resist save the money. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I'm probably tempting fate here but I'm on 100k with original alternator.

They are repairable though, it tends to be the diode pack which goes pop and they can be bought for about 40 quid. I was planning on getting a S/H unit from the bay and overhauling it myself to keep as a spare.

It's a Denso unit which can be bought brand new for less than 300 quid (outright purchase) which might tempt the more affluent amongst you.

Mine went last week, no warning at 61k. Managed to get it recovered after a wrangle with the RAC from Bath to Guava in Guildford who as usual gave a very efficient and quick service. one life ,live it.

Mine went around 60k too - completely drained the battery too so the car was dead. Fortunately, we were at home.

Needed a booster pack just to open the doors and put it in neutral

Cost just over £500 from a local Indy - quite a job to fit on a FFRR apparently !

Ive seen the thread about repairing the diode pack, it looked ok to do, the question then is how easy is it to get the altenator off the car? That would seem to be the tricky bit, not neccessarily the diode pack.

Dont mind having a go myself tbh but if its going to be a total pig of a job whch needs a ramp etc then i may leave it to the professionals. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I believe on the TDV8 it involves removing the rads to gain access to the alternator.

It does indeed mean removing radiators although the air-con rad can be left in place as long as you're careful. Saves a re-gas as well. About 4 hours if you're lucky.

Just spoke to the indy, £500 notes to swap, and aparently you have to remove some cooling hoses too so it will drop the coolant. Pig of a job, quoted 4 hours but said would probably take 6. Not a do it on the drive job There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
