Amazing honesty from LPG fitter

So after many recommendations from forum users and friends I decided to contact AMR autos to get a quote on an LPG install

Here is his reply !


Hi

Only L322 Range Rovers upto 2006 with BMW M62 engines are ok for conversion, the later ones from 2006 with Ford/ Jaguar AJ8 engines are not suitable for conversion as the valve seat are not hard enough and will recede causing sever engine damage,

I am sorry but we are not doing any gas conversions at the moment due to the high price of LPG.
If you do decide to do it as with all makes of gas systems there performance will be identical but there will be an economy drop of around 25% when running on gas.

At the moment gas is around 79.9 ppl at the pumps with this taken in to account to match mileage on petrol the real price of lpg is around 99.87ppl i.e. a car on petrol does 20mpg, running on gas it will do 15mpg. With the price off gas so high now the savings are much smaller and obviously you don't save a penny until your conversion is paid for in full. I know I am shooting myself in the foot but we like to be honest with customers.

Well fair play to him for being honnest. Not sure about the 2006 onwards bit, but i know you have to use a valve lube on the later engines.

I am paying 62p at the moment on a account system. I bought my 2004 RR already converted so I think it is worth running it on gas. I love it to bits and cant notice any performance difference. Gone:

Why did you buy a petrol FFRR? Probably with view or idea to get converted. The petrol has a lot of plus sides and some are the performance over diesels, quietness etc. so when your doing your working out as to whether or not its a viable option think about working out costs compared to running a diesel. Obviously 0.71p p/l compared to £1.39 p/l will make things look different. Not sure if that makes sense? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Everything he said is true. however on LPG (currently at 70ppl chez moi) my cost per mile is 25p, same as my TD6. less than 25% less efficient than petrol but nearly half the price. the maths speaks for itself.

And ..... I get better performance, better sound and a better driving experience!

A few of us on here have used a converter in Cardiff with great results. Cost c. £900 i think.

BLs miles have gone up a bit more than a smidge recently I think due to unforeseen things Sad

There are cheaper lpg places about and you can claim back some power and mpg by virtue of knocking the cats out and getting a proper setup.

In the long run if you want economy Stef your best going diesel and biodeisel Wink FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
Mantec Sump Guard, Rigid Load liner, MY10 BT upgrade.

He may be well intentioned, but its only his point if view.

They AJV8 owners running their LPG converted Fullfats will have a very different point of view, appreciating both the economy, and the fault free running. I know I was just glad I took a balanced view after my research, found lots of people who said about the heads, but literally nobody who could back it up with direct experience.

To me a converted S/C is still the perfect car! Thumbs Up Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

a bottle of lube seems to last 000's of miles

Lets just assume you're totally right, and I'm just stupid enough to now be looking for another SC to convert!

Tell you what though, a little challenge for you. You find me a converted Jaguar engined L322, with engine problems caused by the 'soft heads' and I'll buy it, and donate £100 to the forum!

I did some digging on this very subject some time ago relating to LPG conversions on AJV8 (n/a) engines. I spoke with JE Engineering who told me the same regarding the valves.

They can't all be making it up . . . . can they ?

I'm sure they encountered some issues, but as above, find me an SC with valve problems caused by LPG. And somebody needs to tell all the converted L322s, sports and xjr's which are running without any issues.

I had some issues with the EML, but mainly before conversion! Whistle Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!
