With regard to the TR, is muddy grass Grass/Gravel/Snow or Mud/Ruts? Would I have been better using the former?

They do different things to the car, but advice seems to be that if the ground is firm underneath the slippery stuff, use Grass/Gravel/Snow - if not, Mud/Ruts.

My experience of tyres is that the Pirelli Scorpion Mud & Snow (M&S) would be the ideal tyre combination for you

Scorpion is a whole range of M+S-rated tyres (there are about ten varieties of them) - the OEM ones on the Range Rover are Scorpion Zero which are biased towards road use. In my experience they're probably aggressive enough for the sort of off-road use most drivers will need over here, especially on something as capable as a Range Rover. From experience, they are far less effective on muddy fields and tracks than something like the Scorpion ATR though.

The problem is that what makes a tyre good on snow and ice is very different from what makes a tyre good in mud, so you will have to compromise somewhere if you want to use the same ones year-round.

No problem, I thought, my FFRR is designed to go offroad so I flicked the terrain response to Mud/Ruts and headed off onto the grass verge.

This is the problem with modern 4x4's. Most drivers think all they have to do is flick a button and that's it. Done. Problem solved.

Hence why so many get stuck everytime it snows. Very Happy

I took mine to an off roading day last year and was running on Continental Cross Contact and i was quite impressed with how they coped on the grass and mud. All I did was raise the car to offroad height and it got round the courses OK - much to the surprise of the onlookers!

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Java Black

I had a similar problem on a shoot a few years ago, my friend was in his 4.2SC and I was in a D3 at the time. A friend of ours arrived in his XC90 and we spent hours ribbing the hell out of him and offering him a tow when he got stuck.

On one drive we had to take the cars up a very wet piece of grass, small incline really...we had road biased worn tyres and (SLOT) a sudden loss of talent. The XC90 had brand new tyres with quite a deep tread. Needless to say, he drove straight up and we were left floundering.

The gamekeeper said it was purely tyres. Once the mud and grass had filled up the worn tread, they were ike slicks. We had to back up a few hundred yards to clear out the treads.

Nothing like the proper tyres and talent! Bloody embarrasing though Big Cry

20" does seem to be a problem. Pirelli dont seem to do a 20" M & S tyre. I take it the Scorpion Zero is very much a road biased tyre like the Conti?

I have 20" tyres on my summer wheels which are Pirelli Scorpion M&S, they come in the 255/55/20 OEM fitment too.

For winter I use Goodyear Ultragrip+SUV tyres and they are outstanding. Was a pain finding 18" wheels that fit a SC though ...

20" choices with a bit of winter tread: (275/45 20 are almost IDENTICAL ROLLING RADIUS TO factory tyres but nice and fat)

I run a fleet of Range Rovers and Land Rovers & without decent tyres you are knackered. Vred Wintracks, GG AT,s Goodyear AT,s or Coopers are a minimum for us and all work well without embarrassment ! Pirelli Scorpions are useless in slippery mud and have caused issues

Yup - what he said!

I personally found the Scorpions were great on motorways but were not good at all on wet or muddy grass.

I changed to Toyos last year and went through snow, deep mud and wet grass in the hills very easily (where I had struggled before).

I suspect that the Coopers would have been even better, but they may be noisy on motorways.

Again, Scorpion is a whole range of tyres and Scorpion ATRs (as opposed to Zeroes) are pretty useful off-road.
