07 TDV8 gearbox oil leak

Hi
have just purchased a TDV8 07 with 65k on the clock
Now noticed it has an oil leak from either gearbox or transfer box, hard to tell which, as it's at the joint of the two
Dare not drive it, as I don't know how much oil it's lost, been told you need a laptop and thermometer to check level!!
Does anyone know the viscosity of the transfer box oil? I'm in France and cannot find the Esso product stated in the manual.
Is there a warning light for low transmission oil? I'm terrified of damaging the boxes
Car is booked in to a main dealer for a week's time, but really need to use the car in between them.

Is it leaking from the bolted seam on the transfer case? Its the seam with the inverted torx bolts holding it together.

If so it is from the trans box and it needs splitting and re sealing. There is a fill plug on the trans box where the level can be checked, fill to the hole. Mine did this was a slight weep though.

Gb oil is i think cherry colour, the trans oil is "oil" colour. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

I keep monitoring the situation, as Ive only had the car 4 days!
Oil is tracking down from the 5 bolt hollow casting mount of the transfer box, have checked oil levels, transfer box is about 5mm from filler hole, when I tried gearbox, oil started to come out as soon as i loosened filler hole nut. really worried that ive dropped a b*****k, this could be a very expensive repair, booked in for inspection at the end of the week, also have rear O/S rear rose joint bush`s worn... expecting a big bill!
Oh, the deep joy of owning a Range Rover!
Wish i`d have bought a Freelander

I assume that when you looked at the gearbox oil level, the engine was running (with the gearbox in neutral and on the handbrake, level parked etc.). If you don't have the engine running, the level is too high Smile

ZF lifeguard fluid (gearbox) is oil colour not any sort of reddish Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

So, to clarify... start engine, select neutral, remove plug {alan key head] and the oil should be level with th hole?

Yep and the gearbox temp should be between 30 and 50 C.

Also, when you start the engine, sit in it, run the gearbox through all the positions twice (leave the selector in each for a few seconds) to ensure the box hydraulics are full of oil.

Once you have done that and you take the plug out, there should be a tiny trickle of oil coming out. If none comes out the level is too low.

For this sort of top up, I bought a 140 ml syringe with a bit of plastic hose.

For my current transmission cooler woos, I have bought a 5 liter filler bottle (sold as insecticide spray unit). There is a post on here with photos, mine is the same as one of the recommended ones. See below post, the fence sprayer.

So, you remove and check the level with the engine running?

Yes, with the engine running to "keep the oil in the gearbox hydraulics"

That is why it has to be in neutral or park and on the handbrake and maybe even wheel chocks for extra safety.

It is very important the car is on a level surface of course !!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Thanks for that, done as you suggested, took for a drive around the block, came back, went through the gear positions, sat it in neutral ticking over. When I undone the fill bolt and started to remove, oil started to come out..so it seems that it`s not low.
The transfer box i checked static, and the level was approx 4mm down from fill bolt hole.
so hopefully levels are not bad, its due to go in on Friday afternoon for an inspection as to what needs doing.
Thanks again

Doesn't sound too low. Transfer box may have a little more but 4 mm is not major. Hope they don't find a major issue. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Worth remembering that the tiniest oil weep looks far worse than it (usually) is as a little oil makes a lot of itself! Unless you are getting pools of oil on the floor, it's not a major leak!

Garage just called and cancelled appointment !!
Tech has had an accident, and won't be back for 3 weeks!
Next nearest dealer 2 hrs away
Took mounting off of transfer box yesterday, to see where
leak is coming from, looks like a hairline crack in casing
So have coated over with metal repair resin, just to see if this stops it
Looks like a new transfer box then, if this is the cause.
Deep joy
