Replacing tyres

Current tyres are coming to the end of their lives so I'm wanting sound advice on a good tyre to replace them with. I don't use the vehicle off roakd and seldom in snow so I'm looking for a tyre that is good for everyday road and motorway use. The standard tyre I've seen on late factory cars seems to be Continental but I've also seen and heard good things about Pirellis. Are Pirellis really as good as they are am out to be and how much would I need to spend to get a set of 4?

I'm wondering whether it might be cheaper to buy tyres with the wheels from Overfinch or other and sell on my old Sipercharged wheels which are in really good shape....

The Pirelli Scorpion is well suited to the Range Rover. I am not a fan of the Conti's. There are plenty of current tyre choice choice threads active at the moment.

Which confirms my thoughts about the Scorpions...I'm guessing around £250 each.

Cheers niceday, I saw these last week. What would I get for my old Supercharged wheels? Couple of kerb marks on two of the rims but nothing that notices or can't sorted cheaply.

No idea I'm afraid.
Just depends if someone wants a set, possibly to refurb or use as a winter set.
You should be able to get an idea looking back thro the FS and Wanted section and see what they go for. I've a feeling not a lot to be honest.

I bought my car on a mix of Toyo's up front and Nexen Roadian (brand new) on the rears.
The Toyo's quickly worn on the outer edges, even though the central area of tread had a lot of life remaining. I had the tracking checked immediately which was not at fault. I ran the recommended pressures for the 20" size, 36psi front and 42psi rear.
The Roadian's although a lot of people rate them, are a budget tyre choice for this car. I didn't like the way they appear to bulge out on the sidewall. I would sometimes find myself re-checking the pressures more frequently as I thought they were going flat.

I changed all 4 for Pirelli Scorpions which have been great, they wear evenly, have better sidewalls (no bulging) and more tread on the shoulders. They weren't noisy on the road despite them being labelled as a Mud & Snow type tyre. I had decided that when it was time to replace, these were worth the extra cash against the budget choices.

I recently bought new wheels and they came fitted with brand new Michelin Lattitude Diamaris, having had no experience of these tyres, I was a little concerned. However the reviews I read were all positive. It appears although again labelled as an M&S tyre, to be biased towards the road.
My initial impression is good, they appear well suited to the car, they were balanced with very little weight which to me says they are well manufactured. Budget tyres sometimes take a lot of weight to balance, which suggests inaccuracies in the mouldings / materials.
On the road they behave well and are quieter than the Scorpions.

As with most things, you get what you pay for. Although I'm not suggesting: most expensive = the best.

I can't comment on off road, as I have little experience of it. All I know is that I completed a Land Rover Experience day and the FF I drove had the standard fit Michelins on and it did everything that was asked of it.

The Scorpions I bought were all part worns, I bought them to try them as I have tyre OCD (forgive the expression) and didn't want to buy 4 brand new tyres to be disappointed and have to remove and buy something else.

Hope this helps, it's all my opinions and based on my own experiences.
Had it, loved it!

Search on ebay for Pirelli scorpions of the size you want. I bought my last set of four on there for £580 delivered (i mentioned this a while back). Good service and my local fitter put them on for a small fee. I'm not related to the vendor in any way, hence you'll have to search for them yourself, so I can't be accused of anything.
Thumbs Up

Dave thanks for your detailed advice. So it's Michelins or Pirellis indeed to decide upon...

£200 is normally the very cheapest for genuine Pirelli Scorpian 20" from Camskill. At £145 I would be cautious as there are a lot of brand new "Seconds" out their being sold on eBay. Unsellable by the manufacturer.

Just a warning.

any manufactures seconds would have that stamped on the sidewall, these are most likely have been exported and the re-imported at a cheaper price ..we were doing this process over twenty years ago.. ... - .- -.

Recently bought some Scorpion ATRs on eBay - brand new (2012 date stamps) and over a third cheaper than I could find elsewhere. Bargains do come up.

A manufacturer would not allow substandard, yet unmarked as such, tyres to be resold. Would be a liability nightmare.

Remember there are several different varieties of Pirelli Scorpion (ATR, STR, Zero, Zero Asimmetrico, Verde, Verde All Season, Winter, Ice & Snow) - Scorpion Zero are the OEM Range Rover tyre.

Oh blimey! Just when I thought it was getting simple... Aren't the Zeros the best choice for every day driving?
