Why bother with F'ing mechanics!?

As per subject.

I got my local mobile mechanic out to replace the bottom PCV hose as it's a complete pig to do and quite frankly I have better things to do with my time. I've used him before to do messy things like oil changes and he's been very good previously.

However this time he broke a pipe one of the PCV hoses connects onto on the main PCV valve casing which means replacing the whole unit (£60) plus fitting. For now we've araldite'ed it back together but I'm not convicned this will last more than 2 miles down the road.

Not only that but whilst on top of the engine to reach things he knelt on the e-box and put his knee through it!

F*ckety F*ck F*ck is all I have to say. I wish I'd done it myself now so that at least if I'd broken it I would have known it was down to my own incompetence rather than someone elses. I dont expect him to pay for the replacement PCV part but the eBox lid I would have expected him to replace!

best to do as much as you can yourself,

it may take you a few hours more, but a least you know that its done right.

He should pay for the damage he's done!

On a side note how do you know you need a new hose? What do I need to check or does the car display signs. 4.4 V8 Autobiography and 22" wheels!

Before I became 'plod', I was an engineer for 20 years. I've repaired most things, from cars when I left school, to Fork Lift Trucks and have seen most other things in between. I'm glad I can do my own repairs and I will only rely on a dealer/specialist for anything that involves being plugged into a computer to diagnose.
In the last week, I've changed all 4 discs and pads and the 2 bottom arms. I get the bits at discount so I save a small fortune. 02 Vogue

They are dear though. My USB code reader cost £30 from the internets and plugs into my laptop. Will do everything in the engine. Coupled with the iBus interface (£40) I can code the nav, TV, LCM, PDC till my hearts content.

Sadly I had a similar experience when my TD6 was serviced by a local independent garage. Although they used genuine parts from the local Dealer and were fine at what they do (and of course cheaper than a service at the dealer) , only when I decided to do an interim service prior to my European road trip did I discover why my mpg had dropped.

They had not refitted the air cleaner housing properly and as a result the air box was sucking in leaves, debris and much, the filter was black and it can't have done the performance any good.

Dan - sorry to hear of your problems.

Any chance of a sticky on what recommended bits you need to put together for a USB code reader (I don't know why or if you need an iBus interface for example) ? If it's only £30 then I would be happy to change some of my settings by plugging in a laptop !

Bloody hell RR, that's one of the dirtiest air filters I've ever seen! You sure they didn't accidentally use it as an oil filter instead? Laughing

Dan, I'd be interested to fins out a bit more about the iBus interface, there's a few things I'd like to change, like the auto locking etc. 2006 Mercedes CLS
